Well-cruised back into Perth at 11:45 last night after a few nice days down in Esperance and surrounding areas.

We watched the Grand finial at the Lake King Hotel where they were very kindly handing out meat pies on the house for all watching the game, even for us outer towners. After the game rap up we continued on to Esperance doing the night run for the last hour or so. After hitting the spotlights and seeing they were perfectly aligned for Bird spotting but not night driving we did a quick adjustment and powered on.

Arriving at the House I made an amazing discovery, my key’s didn’t fit the new security doors, definitely not good. After a bit of a panic session and a phone call we managed to get hold of the spare security door key and we were in.

The next morning I Managed to fire up the unlicensed and Un-roadworthy beach Suzuki being I didn’t have the key’s to the licensed one LOL, and made the 5k dash for the beach accesses road, I got to say those little Suzuki’s are spectacular in sand. After watching a guy in a Cruiser bog down trying to make it up a dune I thought I would be a smart arse and do it in 2WD, Hitting it flat out in 2nd with 1.3 litres of fury we made it to the top before bogging down, no worries but, selected Low Range 1st and she just drove away. (The cruiser made it over on the second try)

We got in some fishing wile down there and after 2 unsuccessful nights at different location along the beach we finally had success and reeled in a few nice Salmon.

Did a bit of beach work in The Explorer out at Cape Arid and Cape le-Grand fist time on the beach with the Cooper ST’ and I was surprised at how good they were in sand. We had one moment around at Rossiter bay heading towards Dunn Rock where I stoped to Asses the beach, as I tried to take off we began to sink, we just managed to get going agene

Being I had been driving at road pressure along the beach, with the Auto locked in second gear in low Range keeping the revs at 3000rpm at peak toque I had managed to keep momentum going, I should of just dropped the pressure to 15Psi and did it all in High range in retrospect

Cape arid was nice thou we didn’t have time to get around to the old telegraph station which I would of liked to do, but we did see the remans of a wooden boat washed up on the beach at Tomas Fisheries.

After leaving Esperance we made for Norseman then hitting the gravel for a detour out to a mine site where one of my mates had to take some samples of Plant discharge water and some soil samples off a salt lake to analyse back in Perth (Environmental Impact stuff). We didn’t get off-site till dusk and had to travel the last 170km of gravel in the dark before getting back on the sealed road at Hyden surprisingly we only sore 2 roos and only one of those I needed to brake for.

After not driving throe any salt water on the beach and the 2 shallow salty creaks I did cross I did at walking pace. I am on a mine site for 3 hrs then just before we left the water truck came out a wet down the 5km of road we needed to travel to get off site with salty mineral soaked Ground water I was not impressed LOL.

After fuelling up and grabbing a bit to eat we hit the road agene a made for Perth spotted 3 more roos after Hyden 2 of which decided they wanted to jump out in front of the car which resulted in some hard braking then they decided they wanted to hop along the road for the next 400 metres even having 2ton of 4WD sitting on there arse wouldn’t deter them of that.

After getting up this morning and unpacking the car seeing the salt crystals glistering in the sun throe all the dust and mud I freaked and ripped out the pressure sprayer and gave the car the clean of it’s life before the wonderful world of corrosion could get started. LOL

It was nice to get out of the city and away from work for a few days’ to unwind thou not long enough, bring on Christmas Holidays I say.

Cheers.

Use to drive a yellow one round the farm.....i hated trying to reverse down a ill cos the breaks wouldnt work and it was like the accellerator was constantly on!!! almost flipped one day!!!!

hit a bump once and the steering wheel came off!!! then out shootn one night and the gears started playing up....cannt remember what was happening but pasically you couldnt stay in a gear for anything linger than 5 seconds or it'd pop outta gear!!

how olds the zook?? the farm still has the first 2 stroker sold in town but its not runnin - just sitting behind the shed being used for parts...that arent rusted!!!

Cant wait to see the photos if you put them on!!

1985 model I think, 2 door soft top, 4 on the floor, with 133,000K on it, I think they have had it down there for about 10 years so haven’t had a bad run out of it for a beach buggy.

It replacement’s in the shed, 1995 2-door hardtop, 5 speed, it’s got cloth trim and a CD player and it’s a red one and it’s Rust free at the moment.

Hi Exploder,

Seems you had a great break. I'm jealous as heck as I reckon that Esperance is a great place for hol's, with good mix of things to do, see and 4WD on the beach is heaps of fun. We're thinking of going there for XMAS but always a bit hit and miss with the wind that time of year.

Interesting comments about your STs. I thought they might bite in a bit too much but was talking to a guy at work today on same topic who reckons they are great in the sand.

Regards,
Hugh

Yes we had a excellent time down there a extra day or 2 would have been nice, to get out to a few more places, but as always there is never enough time to get it all done.

And Yes I thought they would have dug in on the sand too, but they just cruised along nicely, I had the AT’s on before and I reckon the ST’s are as good if not better in sand.

They have around 14,000k on em now and are going well, no lug’s missing yet, thou I think one is getting close to coming off and they have only very minimal chipping. It Sure as hell isn’t anything to get all steamed over but.

So far my impressions of them are good and would definitely get them agene, we will see if that opinion changers as they get a few more K’s on them.

Cheers.
