Hello all,

Can I please get some indication if there are many Navara owners interested in buying a torsen LSD for the front end of their navara.

I have a 2004 TD navara with a locker in the back but want a little more so have found a firm that does R180 lsd centres for subaru's and is willing to do a limited run of centres to suit the spline count etc of the R180 as used in the front of our trucks.

I imagine if there are enough takers the manufacturer will want cash up front before starting the run.

For those who don't know A torque sensing LSD is a purely mechanical LSD and has no clutches to wear and is VERY strong. It is also much more gentle and progressive in application so is the best option for steering axles particularly IFS.

This would improve your trucks ability in sand mud and gravel but would only be of limited value rock crawling. But i reckon if you are into rock crawling a Navara is the wrong vehicle anyhow.

There are many sites on the web with info for those with interest.

Thanks

Eugene.

Price is like all things custom dependant on numbers, I believe for 10 or more $1000-$1200 each.

I already have a locker in the rear. For $1k I cant see a lot of value, and its only an LSD. You can get an auto locker for less than that. So I am out. Thanks.

Fair Enough,

Can't agree about the "it's only a LSD" statement though.

Given the vehicle I have and working for a Uni Mechanical engineering department I would choose a Torsen in the front end over even the much praised ARB Air locker. Why, it works all the time, does not restrict steering, will not stress CVs, and at 1K is about the same price.

It's probably the general lack of understanding in the 4wd comunity that stops companies offering driveline aids for anything other than patrol/cruiser/rover.

Fact: torsen type LSDs are used in all 3 diffs of almost all rally cars, and very very few lockers of any type.

For we 4wdrivers a locker in the back(or brtter still lockable torsen) and a torsen in the front is just about the best compromise. IMHO

I can'y believe there are so few owners of 3 Lt TD navaras believe About $1k is too much for a significant traction upgrade in all but rock crawling terain!

i dont doubt the value of an LSD but from memory you can get swap in used LSD's for these at around $200 or a bit more. Then you just rebuild the thing as tight as you like. I got this info from a dedicated navara forum in the US. The guys know a lot about them and some had done the swap. I dont know anything about parts availability here though, but I would suggest you try and find a used front unit ready to swap in.

Hi f4,

There are no LSDs available for the front end none were made, the ones you refer to are the wrong spline count or r200 which is bigger.

Not to mention clutch type LSD are very much inferior to torsen types and are unsuitable for steering axles because of the effect they have on steering.

Please take the time to read about torque sensing LSDs then you will understand their value in a front axle.
