Has anyone got recent experience withthe condition of the Plenty Highway from Alice to Boulia.

Wondered about taking it on our last trip because it iwas about 300km shorter and looked more interresting than the way we usually travel through Three Ways to the Isa. We were deterred by the sign on the Alice Springs side that said "unsuitable for caravans". We have a 4wd and 18ft caravan.

No recent experience (nearly 18 months ago) but I'd accept the recommendation of the sign unless I had plenty (no pun intended) of time to do the trip. Depends on how fond you are of your caravan :))))

Did the Plenty in August just gone !

Do yourself a favor, DON'T do it with a van !

Unless you want to rattle everything to bits ,,,,

My Camper trailer did it easy, but it has independant suspension, and is purpose built to be dragged anywhere I care to take my 4B,,,and even then, the door seals leaked in one or two spots,, I had to replace the seals

Cheers Bucky

I've no experience with vans, but a bit with the Plenty (6 trips across).
My advice is don't take it.
With unlimited time, resources and luck you could probably do it and poke your tongue out at my advice. But the average person might find it *bothersome*.

Dave,

You never mentioned the van you tow. Is it off-road cause that would make a difference.

Yeah I was thinking the same as you Ross, some vans are actually designed for trips like this and some people will enjoy dragging their van where the signs say it is unsuitable.
I feel sure the poster would get a different response if this thread was put up on the Bushtracker forum.
Having said this I still wouldn't do it in a Jayco onroad model though LOL!!!

Regards, Trevor.

Thanks for the info I have decided to skip this one and go the long way round. We have an Mitsibushi Challenger towing an 18 foot Crusader van (lifted a couple inches) by Dreamhaven
