I need to purchase a new dual fuel lantern, I had a single mantle coleman
I cant decide if I should get a double mantle, this seems to me a bit more of a headache, always need to carry twice as many mantles and may be always replacing a broken mantle
is this correct??
I have my eye on these two lanterns

G'day Steve075,
I would stay with the single mantle light myself.
what is wrong with the old one? They don't stuff up too often, and the generator is relatively simple to replace.
My $0.02

I dont want to get rid of it,I paid $20 for it off a friend, but where the mantle fits on has somehow melted away and broken off...which makes it very loud and goes through alot of fuel

The damage was done to the lamp by tying the mantle on in the wrong place the bit that has fallen off used to have a groove in it that is where the mantle sould be tied ont where the string is in the picture, you may be able to repair that lamp if you find someone who know alot about them or try coleman direct.
In my opinion single mantle is better for the reasons you put these are great lamps good luck with whatever you choose.

I've had a double mantle lamp for a few years now, and I've hardly ever had to replace a mantle.

I know it is a bit more expensive but the Northstar is the ducks guts. One double tied clip on mantle that is super tuff, electronic ignition. Superb. I love my old Tilley but when the chips are down and you just want to get the job done the Northstar is the go.

Single mantle Northstar--will last you and gives a very good adjustable brightness light.Ihave had
mine a few years now with no trouble and the genuine Coleman mantles can withstand a lot of ruogh stuff.

Steve,
Can't make suggestions as to the better lamp, however I have seen single and double Colemans in operation and felt that there was damn all difference in output between the two.
Have you approached Coleman for replacement bits?
Maybe you just need to give your old lamp a birthday spruce up rather than buying a replacement.
Just a reminder to all with Coleman Lamps who may not be aware. The days of tying those fiddly little knots in the bit of string are past, ask for the Coleman mantle with the wire clip, it's not that your replacing the things all the time, its just Murphy's Law that when you do have to replace the mongrel it will be in the dark and the wire clip on mantles are ace.

I've had the basic single mantle for about a year and am very pleased with it. It provides plenty of light for a
bush camp. I'll stand correcting on this from someone who knows about optics but I don't believe two mantles will give you twice the _perceived_ light output of a single mantle. I doubt two mantles would be worth the extra fuel.
A great light – I still use my electric one to illuminate the cooking area, when actually cooking (the Coleman is too heavy to hang on my Heath Robinson clamp-on light stand) but the Coleman does everything else. Nice soft light to read by too and I find the gentle sound it makes kind of… friendly…? :)
Agree with others; the mantles have been more robust than I expected.

I threw my dual mantle coleman in the bin and have never looked back, no bleep ty fuel to carry, no fuel odours, no broken mantles, no blockages and now just use a couple of fluro versa lights. Everyone to their own I suppose!!

G'day Steve,
Took
mine down to the Coleman repair centre at Minchinbury Hometown NSW Syd the other day. My repair was $12.50 For new generator/ jet assembly, The old part had lost the fine needle and was guzzling fuel. Can't complain considering it's almost 10 years old and and has only cost me 12 bucks in parts !

Duel mantel is the way to go,
Only use Coleman mantels, they are near on indestructable. I seem to change them once or twice a year if that. Ive had
mine for about 7 years now. Not one problem.. They are the best laterns on the mas market thats for sure. Safer than gas and easy to transport, and cheap to run.'
If anyone doesnt want theres ill buy it off them
