I'm interested in purchasing a PDA to use with OziExplorer. Have read great reports on the IPAQ HX4700 but unfortunately they are no longer produced. Do any of the other IPAQ's come close to the 4700.
I've been looking at the ASUS A636N with builtin GPS. Would like to know if anyone else has one or knows someone who owns one.
Regards
Ross

Ross,
It's probably going to be a Toyota vs Nissan thing - but I got a Dell Axim x51v from ebay. This was to run oziexplorer and Destinator 6.
I haven't got around to using the oziexplorer yet but it works
well with Destinator 6. Also have a powered cradle for the truck with an extra lead that recharges the bluetooth GPS and the PDA. It also has an external speaker so I can hear the directions. :-)

Hi
Ross,
I purchased a Asus A636 a few months ago and am very happy with it. I bought it for a 4 month trip around Australia & we have been home 2 weeks. I used OziCE as
well as Co-Pilot Navigation. I came home with a full track of our trip & a very interesting option is to load it to Google Earth & look at the trip.
We had no problem at all with the Asus. I used the Ausligs maps with Ozi as
well as the Hema Dessert Maps. I put the maps on a 2gb SD card.
Would recommend the Asus.
Willy

I have an Acer n35 and it is with the GPS inbuilt and it seems to work fine for my limited use. Maybe a cheaper option I don't know.

I don't understand why you won't buy a HX4700. Ebay has new ones for sale. So what if they don't sell them anyomre. I have a HX4700 and it really is a great screen. I run a CF card Globalsat GPS receiver and a 4gb sd card.

We are using a HP hx2110 with SD card & Holux CF GPS. All up off ebay (new) about $250. Running OziExplorer and Destinator (6). Been using it for over a year now, have done quite a few trips and have had no probs.
I think the secret is setting it up correctly- as most problems seem to be user errors and bad setups.
The SD card fits all the (Australia) 250k topos plus
the Desert Map set, and I even put a few 25k and 100k for particular areas.

Troop-a-door, what size is the SD card? I've fitted nearly 100 of the Natmap 250K maps on a 1GB SD card for my HP 2220, using Ozexplorer, but nowhere near all the maps for Australia. How do you do it?

G'day Mikey
Sorry 'bout that. It's actually the 250k Mosaic map I have on the iPAQ 2110. It is about 1/2 the size of all the 250k maps (at only 685mb), but covers all Australia maps.

Hey
Ross,..
I run Ozi CE on an ASUS A636,.. have been for a while. It's great,.. I love it. CE isn't quite as functional as the full version,.. but it still works really
well, and is obviously a more convenient size for in-car than a laptop. Also, the ASUS comes with the full in-car powered cradle straight out the box! Not sure if the HP does or not, and the fold up GPS antenna is sensational,.. never in the way.
Happy hunting,.. and good luck!
M.

2nd that, bought an Asus 636 last December.
Very happy with it.
Friend bought a HP and a bluetooth GPS at the same time.
That bluetooth really chews the battery.
And looking at his set up costs, the Asus came out cheaper in the end.
Was not too sure at first how the GPS aerial would go being on the back of the PDA and in the car. (It does has an extension socket if really stuck.)
Seems to be OK, even in trees and valleys.

Guys,
Thanks again for the input. The ASUS 636 looks like the way to go. Just needed some positive feedback.
