Short answer: NO
Long answer: due to small memory capacity some maps with extremely low detail (worm line maps of bike tracks ect.) but the memory aboard is really intended for the storage of maps that the GPS generates when in the worm line feature (say your driving down a winding road and you get the unit to draw your path ect.). Can be done through the interface cable but I never had to find out how to I'm afraid.
Total agreeance about the instructions they absolutely no use at all ( I used to sell em so what I know I had to dig pretty deep to find out what i know :). Just to cover my @ss I assume your talking about the base GPS72 not the GPS72MAP. The GPS72 map has a data card slot for map cards in it but still little internal memory.
Hope this helps

I take it you mean the GPSMAP 76, as there is such thing as a mapping version of the 72. :-)
Agree with the answer being NO.
