Have a mate who has above vehicle and when motor is running and in neutral, gear box rattles, very noisily. Has only done 87,000km, however have done a fair bit of towing - caravan and some off road.

Nissan say that they have had no problems with the gear boxes for these vehicles.

Regards
Russ

Prickle,
The clutch plate centre may be loose, but other than that it's normal.

Its known as roll over noise, as far no problems with these gear boxes they did have a 5th gear issue.

Russ,

Nissan is LYING !!!

I've just rebuilt mine (2000 model) with an almost flogged 5th ready to let go at the most inopportune time (as they do). Tell your mate to keep an eye on the colour of the gear oil. If it turns rusty brown he's in the poo and it's time to think seriously about how much he loves the truck as he won't get out for less than about 2 and a half to 3 grand for the rebuild plus a clutch if need be. This oil discolouration is common with most that have the 5th gear failure. Other than this and the running hot issues it is a great truck and very predictable in every situation.

Regards, Trevor.

Prickle,

If it rattles in neutral, then rest assured it is NOT 5th gear on the way out.

My old Ford Maverick used to do it and it carried on doing it for years. It's something to do with the drive to the transfer case, but I'm not sure what.

Just ask yer mate to stomp on the clutch pedal real hard a couple of times and it should disappear.

But as Trev says, rusty gear oil and heavy towing with some of the post 1997 gearboxes didd result 5th gear stripping the mainshaft splines. Poor heat treatment and lack of lube to the gearbox mainshaft was the prob.

But this prob don't sound like 5th gear prob.
