BOOTS
Hi,
Am heading off July/Aug '07 in 3 vechile convoy, so getting the itinery finalised basically. Any responses of info would be appreciated.
Wondered what the
Great Central Road conditions are?
What passes are needed? Research suggests 2..is this the case?
Good camp spots along track?
Points of intrest to check out?
Lengh of time to do track in?
We will be coming from
Sandstone,
Leonora,
Laverton.
Also wondered from
Broome, how big a trip to go & check out Gheeki Gorge as a side trip, as we are in
Broome for 5 days! We are coming across the
Gibb River Road, not the Tanami.
Im sure Ill be firing more questions as our trip is being 'fine tuned', so look forward to any responses with this .
Thanks, Cheers,
Boots

Boots,
I was last on the Great Centarl Rd in Sep 2005 and was surprised at how much it has changed. It is now a pretty wide sand / dirt road and is good for about 60 - 80 kph most of the way. I encountered no wash-aways or bad spots, just a few kms of corrugations at various stages.
I've just checked my saved GPS track and we did the trip from
Yulara to
Laverton in 2 days. The most common
places to "see" along the way are Lassetters
Cave and the Weather Station at Giles - which will let you come in for a tour if you tee it up in adavnce!
As far as
camping goes, we just stopped when the time was right in the middle of no-where and had a ball.
You are correct about requiring two permits to transit the GCR.
Can't help you with the
Broome / sidetrip bit - but I'm sure someone will soon.
Enjoy your trip,

Unless it's had rain, the GCR is a bush highway. 2 days max. If you stay at Warberton you'll be in
Yulara in time for tea. When I went one of the conditions of my permit was that I only
camp in designated
camping areas. And there were precious few of those.
Gheeki Gorge was
well worth the visit. However it's outside of
Fitzroy crossing, not near the GRR . Not sure of your Tanami comment as it runs from the Alice through to
Halls Creek,
well before the GRR.
Have fun.

Hi Boots, your side trip to Geike Gorge is probably beyond a day trip, about 400 k
from
Broome, but not impossible with a real early start. Probably better to
camp there & return via
Tunnel Creek &
Windjana Gorge if you didnt do those from the
Gibb River Road, both worth a visit.. oldbaz.
