Hi,

My daughter is looking at buying a 1998 Prado has 180.000 is petrol asking price is $18.500 (or thats what they have come down to).

Myself I feel this is high in Klms and its maybe getting to the time to be fixing things, will check red book for price. So what I am after basiclly what my daughter should be looking at before she buys.

What is the fuel economy like ??? Gear box, Motor, are there any issues that this model has.

I know this is a very open question but any info I can at least pass on.

Thanks
Brian

I am just about to put my 3.4 Prado up for sale just getting figures on new series now.
Have never kept record of fuel figures but seems OK since 90% of its life is the wifes school taxi. It has 86,000Klm big service just done, new 694 A/t tyres never been off road and all that other stuff comes with it. 2001 model, and will be asking $25,500 O.N.O yhe red book agrees with this and think it boils down to what you are prepaired to pay and what condition the Prado is in.

Good luck in your search. Cheers Tony

Its a 3.4 litre motor and its a one owner (So my daughter has been told). On advise from here about some recalls, I got details of the vehicle and rang a Toyota mob today and I was more than happy with there help.

They will advise me (tomorrow) of the vehicles history and any repairs that have been done and if all the recall stuff has been fixed as well.

Now I call that service :)

Will see what happens from there.

Brian, I'm with you. Nice vehicle, high km for a pitrol. Now I know that some go many times around the clock, but my experience is that around 200K is when things start to need replacing.
Of course if it's been well maintained the chances of this being the case is slim..it is a Toyota, after all !

I bought my 98 Petrol Prado in 2002 with 103,000km and it now has 205,000km!

There have been a couple of recalls - ball joints and rear axle - check if these have been done! Check the steering rack for play!

Other than that just the normal check re maintenance and general care! I love my vehicle and although I've had a few repairs to do over time, it's never let me down on a trip!! (Just have to go and knock on some wood)

Be good if your daughter could find someone reliable in her area to have a look! Maybe someone here could suggest a mechanic that knows 4wd's well and she could ask to them to take a look!

Steve

Hi Brian, I ahve a 99 3.4 GXL and bought it for $24k approx 5mth ago. it was in top nick with 120k on the clock. have not had any probs so far and have done 25k in it. it is an extreemly capable truck as stock. fuel econemy is around 12-13lt/100 on freeway and 16-18 offroad averaging around 14 I'd say.

My 2000 Prado has 38,000 on the clock and nothing has ever gone wrong with it. Taken it offroad many times.

When unladen with no roof racks can get fued economy down to 10.9L/100km if stay just under 100kmk/hr.

If the 3.4V6 motor is similar to the early 3.0litre V6, suggest you get the timing belt checked and replaced. Mine broke before it got to 80,000 Km and the service book said to replace every 100,000 Km. As it was still under factory warranty they had replace the whole engine. Pistons went through the valves and bent the con rods. Crankshaft was also bent and all the internals was a mass of chewed up metal. Toyota was good about the warranty, and never quibbled about the fact that they had to get a new motor straight out of the box
