darren you are probably having trouble because the surf would be a turbo and i think the assembly's are different

Darren,
I'm not familiar with the arrangement on the series one 4runners, but i'm in the process of doing it on my 90 model. On the 3L engine the size of the inlet manifold is larger than on the Surf, so it requires a little creative tubework. Just take your time to get the placement of the assembly correct. hope this helps.

I have looked at doing the same to my 1989 Hilux Dual Cab (with after market turbo).

I sourced an aircleaner assembly from East Coast 4WD out of a 2LT Surf. I got it to the point that I believe it would work fine mounted up on the wheel arch near the power steering resevoir.

Had to modify (cut) the original air cleaner hose down but it would have done the job OR I could have purchased a suitable length of hose to fit.

Ended up not fitting it. Decided for my situation I'd be happier with the 2nd battery in the ute next to the fridge.

There is another option for non turbos where the original air cleaner is modified and turned around inside the engine bay.

I found a bloke in WA who'd done this. He sent me the pics and it looked great. Unfortunately for me the turbo meant it wouldn't suit my needs.

I have some pics of his set up if you'd like them.

Cheers
