I'm looking to do some work on my 80 series and was wondering if anyone has had any experience or encountered any troubles replacing the front disc rotors, the front hub seals and bearings and I was thinking of putting a new seal kit through the power steering pump as it leaks like a sieve.

Also if anyone could help me with some prices on what I should pay for this stuff that would be great

Thanks in advance

Deano

The disc are cheap if you buy after market ones, about $140 a pair+ another $50 for pads .
I think it will cost about $150 for the front seal kit + grease and diff oil.
Bearings are not usually replaced ,just repacked and adjusted.
Its an all day job. Ive never done an 80 but Ill suppose you need a 54mm hub socket

Power steering kit is about $50. You need to have it pressure tested otherwise the seal kit will be pointless.

Your 80 had smaller discs than later models....you have the option now of upgrading to better brakes, by buying the later model discs and a pair of later callipers...they are thicker and larger, and a good thing to consider at this point.
If you leave the back as is but do the work on the front, no other mods need doing like bigger rims...and it will result in better brakes. Everything bolts on.
Of course if you just want to replace, i would recommend DBA slotted rotors, which make a difference themselves, on either size....
The pump...i would buy a secondhander, as the bush could be worn, then nothing will stop the leak....all 3f's run thesame pump, and so do the cressida.

Your all over it! Thanks for advice on bigger brakes. The anchor and I are planning a trip away and will be towing, so the bigger brakes seem like the way to go. But what size discs and calipers do I go up to?

Cheers

Deano Give me a call on 0408965433 and we can discuss further. I think the later 80 had 12 inch discs, and 32mm thick, whereas the early 80 had 11 inch discs 27mm thick. When the 4.5 motor came out, they went bigger, but only changed the disc, backing plate and calliper lengths...so it all bolts up.

Dozer

Missed you a couple of times, decided to go with the same size disc but slotted variety ( thanks for the advice).

The local brake guru said that spending the money on bigger calipers and discs might disappoint due to the piston bore not changing that much. It sort of made sense to me.

So now going with a set of DBA slotted rotors and I think lucas? pads on the front and once the back discs are up for renewal ( they are both just .2mm above the min thickness) I will change those over to slotted rotors also.

Once again thanks for your help

Hey there Deano,
I just looked up my invoice for you. I paid $220 for 2 front discs DBA Brand and $6.60 for front seals. Just paid $90.00 for front pads (non genuine). I work in a Dealership, so I think my pricing would be pretty good. Let me know if not and I'll cut his testicles off!! LOL

Was this a swivel hub bearing kit, with axle seal, or a front wheel bearing kit ???

Hi Barn & Dozer,
It sounds like the swivel kit. I just had mine done, parts cost $100. each and with a service and a transfer box repair (some git stripped my drain plug and split the the transfer box). Total cost was over $2000 (still recovering!). There was over 30 hours labour, luckily it was all at staff pricing.
