Hi all

I need a little help. I am looking at converting my 81 MQ from a 4 speed to a 5 speed box from an 84 MQ with a p40 motor. Originally my MQ had a L28 motor but now Holden 4.2 V8 coupled to the original nissan 4 spd. The transfer case on my MQ is seperate from the gearbox located approximately below the back of the rear passenger seats. The 5 sp box has the transfer case attached to the box, however I think they can be seperated.

Does the 5sp from the P40 have the same size input shaft as the 4sp from the L28? Would there be any other forseable problems in the conversion. I have found a couple of articles relating to the sd33 but I am not sure if the gearbox specs are different.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers Gav.

Try the MArk's 4WD adapters web site. They have kits for all sorts of engines to all sorts of gearboxes and would know the answers you require.

The SD33 4-speed and 5-speed boxes are almost identical, and only require different length tail shafts for fitting. However, the setup with separate transfer case sounds quite different (like the early 720 dual cab). The 5-speed gearbox and the transfer case are bolted together, and separating them would be an engineering feat as you would need an extra oil seal at least. Probably the best way to tackle this is to get the tailshafts custom made to fit the modified drivetrain.

My brother has an '81 MQ SD33 that he has changed over to 5-speed.

Cheers
John
