Hi All,
have to go from Karratha (600k north of Broome) to Cairns and back to pick up a caravan, leaving next Wednesday. What would be the quickest and safest way? whilst avoiding dirt roads.
Kindest Regards
Paul

When was Karratha shifted , Anyhow the most logical way is great Northern Hwy to Kununurra over to Katherine ,3 Ways, Mt Isa,then either to Townsville / Cairns or north from Cloncurry to Normanton /Croydon/Mt Surprise/Mt Garnet/ Malanda /Cairns all sealed

In 3 weeks I'm going the other way - Cairns to Pt Hedland and like you asked myself the same question. There will be adults and 2 medium sized dogs travelling in our Troopy. I have concerns about the daytime temperatures and the possibility of early rains in the NT/Kimberley leg.

Because we want to see a relly in Townsville before we go, we are going down there and across to the Stuart Hwy before heading north. When we get to Dunmarra we'll decide whether we'll take the Buntine Hwy across to Halls Creek or keep heading north and go the long way through Katherine and Kununurra before heading down to Broome and Hedland. This latter way would keep us on the bitumen the whole way. I'll only go the Buntine if I feel comfortable that we can handle the temperature and if there hasn't been any rain. I've never driven the Buntine but I understand it's a pretty straight forward drive.

The route on the Travelmate site is the shortest but does include two gravel sections so check them out before committing yourself to going along them.

Good luck

We did the Duncan, Butine from Halls Creek in 2005. Would have done the Tannami back to Qld but was closed due to rain. Flat tyre 30ks from Halls Creek but we did have a screw in tyre so must have had a slow leak. Otherwise a dirt road some places great someplaces corrigated and some perfect because grader was on the road. As we left late in the day because of returning to Halls Creek to repair tyre I mean replace as it was st..fed we camped up a side ride along the way. Remember well full moon nobody anywhere around, a small fire a scotch or two plus a port or two great spot. Met up with a road train on the road next day who could not see us coming so we ate his dirt for a number of ks until we stopped for a drink so that we could get away from him.
We travelled with a Trackabout Safari Trailer.
Cheers

Can't help you with routes across the top, but sure hope you'll be looking for the gravel tracks straight across the middle on the way back!
