Hi everyone,

I am just trying to get a feel for off road tyres. As I am reasonably new to the scene, I would love to get some personal advice.

4WD Specs. Land Rover Discovery 2.5lt TDi

I drive off road about 50/50, involving more mud than gravel. So far I have had a very close look at Cooper Discoverer S/T, to get the best alrounder, and the BF Goodrich ATR.

Cheers

If you drive 50% offroad particually in mud, the Mud Terrain/STT/MTR patterns would probably be more suitable than an all terrain type pattern. BFG sell lots of tyres due to their success in offroad racing. Cooper sell lots of tyres due to their huge advertising & (questionable) long warrenty. Goodyear MTR's sell lots of tyres due to word of mouth.......Make of that as you will :-)
Cheers Craig...........

Given the relatively high "mud miles" you say you do, a proper mud terrain would be the best bet. You only have to get stuck ONCE in mud with any sort of H/T or A/T to realise what you should have bought. If it costs you $100 for a recovery in the middle of nowhere, you have just covered the extra cost of the M/T's over the H/T's or A/T's.

Coopers have a "warranty" that ends up being more expensive to service all their terms and conditions than it is to replace a tyre over its life (tyre rotations by their service agents only, at ridiculous prices, and VERY frequently, etc)

Goodyear MTR's are NOT a mud tyre specifically (MTR = "Maximum Traction Radial"), but the appear by all count to be a good allrounder.

BFG are "vanilla" tyres, inoffensive, and do the job competently, but not top of the class. As noted heavily sponsor offroad events and offer significant discounts to competitors on their tyres, although some of the compounds/constructions on competition spec tyres are different to the commercially available tyres with similar tread patterns.

Look around at other brands before you settle on a tyre.

Hey Dave,

I currently run BFG MTs on my 99 Disocery Td5. I have a 3" lift and run 265/75R16 which works well both on and off road. The MT is great off road and also handles well in the wet on the black top. The tire is a little noisier than the Cooper ST which I used to run. The cooper ST is very prone to lug chipping.

For an alternate choice at about $20/tire more, check Mickey Thompson Tires. They make a MT similar in tread design to the cooper STT. I am in a discovery group the guys who run this tire swear by them. Remember different tires are better suited to certain vehicles. What works well on a Patrol might be dud on the Disco.

Good luck

Kelvin

Another question regrading tyres. I recently bought a set of NEXEN A/T tyres for my V6 4Runner on the recommendtion of an aqauintance who has them on his GU Patrol He swears by them. Mine after 3000 Km started to go out of round. Took them back to the dealer who made every excuse under the sun even to say the rims were buckled. That was the weakest limp wristed excuse I have ever heard. I pointed out to the the trye rep that if he looked carefully he could see the whel weights which gave the impression of being buckled. FINALLY !!!!!!! in the end they agreed to replace all four tyres - on the condition that if they found that there was nothing wrong with them when they tested them back at the depot I would have to pay a pro rata price. I remained quite blase about the whole matter and stated that consumer affairs would be notified - if and when they tried to pull that stunt over me. When the tyres were fitted they wre perfectly smoomth , no vibrations are shuddering, but as mentioned earlier they started going pear shaped after 3000 km I`ve seen this happen with even the most expensive tryes that moenycan buy and well known house hold brands. So my question is why do tey go out of round after a few thousand Km . I might add that 90 % of my driving of late has been on the black stuff no off road work other than a beach run some threeweeks ago to Wedge Island. Nexcen make high performance tyres and also ROADSTONE which is one and the same tyre as NEXCEN.

Hi Dave,

I recently did over 10,000 km from Perth to Uluru via Great Central road, Oodnadatta track, Birdsville track, Strezlecki track, Melbourne for AFL Grand Final then home in my GU Nissan Patrol ute with a heavy slide on Camper on the back. Approx 50% was rough offroad work. I purchased BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's and never had a puncture or any problems but came across loads of other trekkers along the way who had blow outs with the factory fitted tyres. The BFG's have a 3 ply side wall whereas other brands mostly only have 2 ply. Wear looks to be about 15% so I expect to get about 70 - 80,000 km out of them. I'm a BFG convert.
