For those who wondered, I tested out for how long you can go when the fuel light comes on in a 99 GU 4.5
well I did some testing this weekend and found that once the light comes on I get 50kms out.

Hi Troll,
I did a similar thing with the Cruiser because when I filled up after the light came on it never took anywhere near the tanks capacity. I did over 110kms before I chickened out and topped it up.

In the New Triton ML 3.2 common rail I did 750 ks before the light came on then did another 30 odd to a Servo before I filled up and it took 65 litres, the
tank holds 75, cripes it's economical!

Yeah I'm amazed, had the 3.00 Nissan prior to this and the difference in economy and performance is chalk and cheese.
Did 900 odd ks back from Lismore to
Forbes and averaged a lot less than that too (7.60l/100ks) but I think I must have had a tail wind all the way so won't believe it till I can repeat the performance

I did 70ks towing the camper after the sub
tank light came on in the GU 4.2turbo.
I was a starting to sweat when the servo came into view.

My 97 cruiser has approx 10L left when the light comes on.
Was driving a Dunnydoor SV6 yesterday that was low on fuel. Beeping and a bowser graphic filling and emptying etc in front of me. I didn't know that it could tell me how far it would go. Now I'm up to speed (whizzz..) on the new compterized gadget filled modern cars. Only the possible top speed frightens me.

Bloody commodes.
I left
Norseman with the computer saying there was fuel for 220km heading to Kal (about 180km away)- As I get to the 100km distance mark, computer says 30km left, then as I drive another 5 km it counts down to 5km left. I had air con off, cruise set at 100.... The only thing I can guess is that even after it says 5km left there is still 50km in the
tank. Dodgy computers.

Coming from
Karumba, across Queensland last year when the servo I was planning on refueling at ran out of diesel and was forced to play beat the fuel light into
Tom Price. I managed to get 70km out of a 98 2.8 (towing trailer though) after the light came on but it was a case of when get to top of
hill put into neutral and coast down the other side and the last few clicks I was praying. When I found the next servo I almost got out and kissed the ground!
Checked filters for gunk (CAV type) but was hardly any as I had pulled the tanks off the year before and had them cleaned. I try to keep the tanks with atleast 3/4 in each all the time (carry extra weight but for peace of mind).

Was that the servo at
the entrance to the Nat
park coming in from Headland ? Its about 70k to
Tom Price from there ? They had run out of petrol a few weeks before I got there, was a great topic of convo apparently.

Yeah it was and it seems from your fun there that they forget to order in supplies (or they are jokers who take delight in watching 4wd owners $hit emselves in the driveway when no juice for the guzzler!).

Another little trick if your caught short - if you hotwire the transfer pump on the sub
tank you get (
well I did anyway) another 3 litres pumped into the main (I did it into a drum and measured). Could get you the 20 odd k you need to get to the servo.
Cheers Andrew
PS - I always run my tanks down - some suggest to keep them topped up to keep the crud out of the filters etc. I'm not convinced this would work - but it may, but then you will get clogged filters as soon as you go on a long trip and use your full capacity, so if the practice of running tanks down gets the crud from he bottom of the tanks gradualy I'll take that option. Will gratefully accept any advise to the contray......

Did the same test last week in our "new 4 week old" '97 3.4ltr Prado. Drove around most of the day after the light came on (with finger on sub-
tank switch when stopped at lights etc just in case). Ended up getting 127 kms before it started "coughing" while going uphill. Filled it up and did a consumption calc and worked out to be 12.78 ltrs/100k's (22.4 mpg approx). I was happy with the results as it was 95% city/suburban driving. Looking forward to doing the same test on open roads.
Cheers,
David
