I have a family member that is looking at buying a new Pathfinder for towing a caravan close to 3 t in weight. I have heard that there has been a few 'rumours' with the towbars breaking off the rear of the vehicle when towing such a large load when using weight distribution hitches.
Has anyone had any experience's with this, and what is the cause?

Smithy,
The "rumours" you have heard, have been heard by me also and pictures on this site show the problem if you can find it in the archives.
My opinion would be, not to tow at the vehicles max tow rating all day every day if it can be avoided. Especially seems there is vehicles that have a higher tow rating to give you a larger safety margin with the weight they want to tow.
As for cause, I think in the reported incident on this site had two bolts snap off leaving only four to hold the fort of all the weight????
Cheers, Trevor.

towing a 3 t caravan & worrying about te tow bar breaking, how about also consider the size of the caravan throwing the car around, u would be much better off getting a cruiser or partol or at least something bigger to tow a load that big specially all day?

gda I also bought new pathy to tow caravan and had some doubts over the nissan towbar. Have checked with pathfinder club and nissan and the problem with towbar is only when you add a hayman reace stabiliser setuo to the nissan towbar. nissan bar ok on its own. or fit hayman on its own . dont mix up systems.
as far as towing the pathy tows better than the patrols in an auto version turbo diesle.patrol auto towcapacity less on a patrol than pathfinder, using an auto hope this helps. Just finnished an offroad trip with pathy and i loved it went everywhere the patrol went just needs a lift. used auto uphill and manual mode downhill all worked great...
