My husband and I are planning a trip to
Cape York next June/July school holidays. Our daughters, their partners and children would like to do this trip with us. The kids will be 6, 8, 10 & 13. We are receiving comments from people to the effects, that they wouldn't take kids there - too far, too rough, too boring, that kind of thing. Any comments? Any other advice re trip most welcome also.

Were these comments by people who have actually done it with kids themselves.....in most cases it seems not to be the case.
Plan it around travelling with kids and you and they will no doubt enjoy yourselves. Go for it i say.

That advice is total C R A P. The kids will love it - especially if you do the Telegraph Track. And in my opinion if you're not going to do that then don't bother going. If you do a bit of research you'll find that there's heaps of history that the kids can learn about eg at
Cooktown. You don't say where you're leaving from. If you have long distances on bitumen then make sure you have activities for them. There's some excellent advice on this site - look on the left under Topic Search for Trips with Kids.
Cheers from the Moose
(PS have been 3 times to
Cape York, first before kids then when they were about 3 and 5 and then again when they were teenagers. They loved it each time)

I fully endorse Mooses comments, having taken my kids when they were small, then a few years later. They'll have a ball.

We did the Cape with 5 vehicles this year, 3 vehicles had kids ranging from 4 to 16, and all the kids had a ball, we tried to factor in special things for them to do along the way and if there was somewhere safe to swim tried to give them a day there to swim.
I was worried that our kids would find the trip boring because there were a lot of kms to travel, but where ever we stopped they would group together and find a game to play, explore etc. Sometimes I don't think we give them enough credit. Their imagination and ability to create entertainment for themselves was fantastic.
I would just suggest doing what we did, get out a map and perhaps a book about
Cape York, read other trip reports, gather a list of what you really want to see and do, and take it from there.
The kids will love it as much as you will

I was one of the two with Richard, an 8 and an 11year old and they did have a ball, I don't think they where much of an impact on the rest off the group and if they did I would like to think it was only in a positive way. I did this without my wife who had to stay with our buisness, my one big concession was I put in twin DVD screens in the back for the trip to
Cairns and then they where packed away until we got back to
Cairns.
Best bit of advice I can give you is no mater where you are at 3pm it is time to set up
camp, that way you have time for the kids to play, swim and still
cook and eat dinner before it gets dark, these where our best days.
The chance to share this trip with your kids will be one of the things they will tell their children about.
Have fun
Craig

I wouldn't dream of not taking my two girls (ones nearly 3 years, the other is nearly 1 week). LOL
I don't think that I would be ever able to forgive myself if I didn't as it would be such a great learning experience to share with them.
Plus their Nan and Pop would spoil them to much if they stayed behind.
Cheers Kev

We did it, we loved it, we'd do it again. Our kids were 2 and 4 at the time and had a ball. Obviously need to keep an eye on them but there are so many spots you can relax and not worry about the local reptiles. We did a trip report up of our travels if interested ->
Cape York 2002.

We plan a 5 week trip every 2 years WITH OUR KIDS. Our first was from Central Coast NSW to
Cooktown then down through the outback 7,500kms in 5 weeks in total. Our kids at the time were 2 and 4. Our second trip was 11,500kms up through the centre of Australia and they were 4 & 6. Our next trip is to
Darwin in June/July next year.
Of the trips we have done, our children have loved it. I had a box of "travel toys" in between them in the car. In that I had toys that I did not have out at home. Also, along the way, I used to call into the op shops, Salvos etc and give them $2-5.00 each to buy new toys and donate some old ones. Keeps it all fresh and exciting. On our last trip we did buy a portable DVD player - but that was only allowed on after 1.00pm (we leave at 8.00am) and they were only ever allowed 1 DVD to watch. Lots of home grown games, for the older ones, find a words, eye spy and road bingo (cross of things as you go along).
My kids love travelling so much that only last week my son asked me if he could have his birthday party at
Broken Hill and go fossicking. We all love to travel and start planning our next trip before we even get home.
