G'day All

Any time I've asked hire companies about people being able to use their vehicles on Cape Yok's OTL, I've been told no way. Does anyone know if a hire company exists that will allow hire vehicles on the Telegraph Line? I've never been able to find one.

Cheers

David

I winched a Britz troopy camper up the side track at Gunshot this year. He probably was not meant to be there though...

Yeah I winched one out of Nolan's Brook back in 96 and he was definitely NOT supposed to be there then either.

I don’t think you are “technically” allowed to take any Hire car/ Hire 4WD on a 4WD track.

Four Wheel Drive Hire Service allows for this flexability in their travel as far a i know.......we were even offered vehicles from them to take up to Innisfail to deal with Cyclone Larry.

Why the cryptic question?

Roger that. A mate of mine hired a vehicle from 4wd Hire Service a couple of years ago to travel up the tip over the OTL

Cryptic? Sorry, I didn't mean it to be cryptic. I have a genuine enquiry from some people who want to hire and do the OTL. The companies I've dealt with in the past have never allowed it. Thats all.
I thought someone here could have other knowledge/experience.

sorry to jump to conclusions......must be the sceptic in me :-)
Just seemed a strange question when i looked at it, as there was at least one well-known (well up north anyway) company providing just such a service. ;-)

As you were.....

I think you and I both read a bit much into it. I deal with that company all the time, but I've never asked them about the OTL. My clients however have always informed me that the hire companies I direct them to say no to OTL, I assumed that also meant 4wd Hire service.

Anyhow we will see what they say today.

Cheers

Thanks David.

Their terms and conditions for hire do not restrict this trip per se as it is more or less a "you break it, you pay for it" condition, which is only fair.

The only condition i can see that might affect this track is clause 13.13 stating that you are "not to make any unsafe or impractical water crossing".

I would be dissapointed if they restricted use after claiming to be flexible in their hire arrangements. Let's see what they say :-)

G'day David,
such Hire Companies are about. 4WD Hire Service is one of them.
I never have a problem getting 4WD's for tours to ANYWHERE. Had as many as 11 hired 4WD's on one of them.
Normally I take a max of only 6 - 8 cars.

Good luck,
Mike

Mike

Thanks for that, I've never asked 4wd Hire Service who I've dealt with before about the OTL, but anyone who has travelled with me or planned to, has been knocked back re OTL by most of the others.

Cheers

David,

I am amazed at where the hire vehicle go.
Have you also noticed how fast they can travel with the hire car sticker on the door of the vehicle. Next time I buy a vehicle I will not worry about the turbo and will put a hire car sticker on the door.

GDT has a deal with a 4wd hire company that we can take there vehicles on tracks that they are not allowed to travel on. That way they are stilled covered for insurance etc.

David,

We hired a Prado in June from Meteor in Cairns for the Cap trip.

There were conditions applying.
Two of these were minimum hire period 2 weeks and not going in water beyond a certain depth. Can not remember what the depth was though but it would have excluded some creek crossings.

I was rather cautious of the last condition mentioned as the vehicle did not have a snorkel fitted.

most hire companies don't like you taking their cars on the otl but if you organise your own travell insurance to cover it, you can do it.. we took a troopy up there in june.. insurance cost us $100.00.

biggest problem is with reliability of hire cars.. they all have big k's and low maintenance.. ours destroyed a front hub before coen, and the rear diff was shot by the time we got back to cairns

Several people have already mentioned 4Wd Car Hire. Here's two more
Travel Car Centre (Perth & Darwin)
RMS in Adelaide (don't know where else they have depots)

Travel Car & RMS have 4.2 Troopies with winches and recovery gear, both have hi-top campers and rooftop tents.

Most companies like Britz identify several tracks (OLT, CSR etc) in there conditions that you need to ask permission to travel. I have seen a few of there trucks in these locations and apparently the companies agreed but there was a rider on the insurance about damage that occured on the restriced tracks.
