Hi all
Just a question my oldest boy
asked me and again I had no answer.
He has a 1987 FJ 62 and asked would
it be hard to put coil springs in to replace
the leaf springs. And no I never asked WHY?

There was a mob doing that, I seem to remember, but I don't remember where.
CRAFT raising its head again.

If your oldest boy asked you why they built the Great Wall of China, I guess you could answer that though - eh ? (rabbits, in the reign of Nasi Goreng, too may rabbits)

I would say that there would be too much engineering involved for an outright replacement. Not worth the effort. Better to buy an 80 series or later model.
What could happen though is that he could add coil springs to the existing leaf springs to give the 62 a better ride.
Cheers

Hi Silverback,
About 18 years ago my brother, who had purchased a 1986 Sahara Landcruiser new, had a complete coil spring conversion done.
It was brilliant to drive both on and off road.
I seem to remember the wheel travel was not as good as say a standard 80 series though.
I think in those days the conversion cost him about $5k with full engineering. Bit of a waste of money I suppose but in the late 80's I guess it was a bit of a novelty to have an all coil Landcruiser.
I can't remember the name of the mob who were doing the conversions mate so sorry.

Hi Mate ,
I put Fred's "Cruising on Coils" conversion under my HJ61 quite a few years ago. It definitely freed up the wheel articulation and gave a far better ride. This was particularly evident on our outback trips on corrugations and the gibbers. On the down side it tended to chew out the leaf bushes a bit and i cracked a leaf coming out of sundown one year. Overall though it was a real improvement.
Good luck and Cheers,
Bruce Watt

I got an 80 series instead. Cheaper and so much easier than the engineering, changing springs, steering setup, mounts, installing trailing and radius arms, passing it over the pits... I got a quote of $8k for it from a body builder- most
places I went to didnt want to go near it, although they were happy to sell me any parts I wanted for it.
