I've got the opportunity to buy a 1991 Nissan Patrol with the 4.8 engine which is also on gas. It's done 178,000 km. Are there any specific problems a car this age could have or any specific areas I should check before consider buying?
Thanks,
Dave

If it's a 99 model it will be the 4.5 engine not the 4.8 which came out in 2002 from memory.
As a rule no real problems with the 4.5's just make sure the tappets are adjusted every 40,000 Kms. If it's a 5 speed manual then there were some issues with 5th gear splines around that era.

Hi Dave,
I guess you have already considered the pros and cons of buying a big petrol vehicle. You mentioned it has gas and this is obviously an advantage in running costs for you. My only problem is if you want to go bush, these dual fuel vehicles have very limited fuel range. Gas is not available much outside metro areas and major towns and with the addition of gas, you generally lose one of the fuel
tank in a patrol conversion, limiting further the range of an already very thirsty vehicle. You may have a specific use in mind such as towing or just as a day to day vehicle but if you get the urge to go bush, it may limit your options.
Just my thoughts, Best regards, Michael.

Thanks Michael. The vehicle has only 37 litres of petrol, which could present problems if we do start heading further off to more remote
places, which could be a possibility.
Thanks for your input.

Dave
