Hello Kids

Hope your having a great day.

Positive earth??

Looking at a mates new hilux, there seems to be positive on all 3 terminals going to the headlight. Lets call them left, top and right. When nothing is turned on the 3 terminals are positve. Turn low beam on, Left +, top -, right +. Turn the high beam on Left -, Top +, right +. Is the a positive earth.

To wire up some driving lights do I have the negastive off the switch activating off the high beam wire that goes to neg when switched on (Left wire)

cheers

Hey dude, your post looked a little lonely so thought I'd reply. No idea about what you actually asked, but as a matter of fact, its a little strange - popped on to EO to have a squiz at the end of the day, and I see only 7 posts today, and 4 of them had no replies at all...!

Hilux's are most certainly NOT positive earth (chassis).
Their headlight switching is a little different from other vehicles though...
When you turn on the headlights, the headlight relay applies 12V to the common terminal (via a fuse, one for each headlight) of the headlight globe. High and low beam are then selected by grounding each filament of the globe.
It can be tricky to get things right, one way will make the spotlights turn on when you turn the headlights off.
If you aren't sure, best go and talk to an auto electrician.
Regards,
Michael.

Ads,
I got driving lights put on my Hilux by an auto elect, but he did mention that the Toyota's switch ground. Therefore you'll find on the 3 terminals
1. +12V
2. ground switch for normal lights
3. ground switch for high beams.

to wire up the to the high beam you'll need to wire up an relay with 12v on the other go to pin 3 (ground switch for the high beams). This will give you the relay on off control to drive your driving lights. To control the driving lights on or off, run a switch to the 12v line to the relay.

What driving lights did your mate go for?

Cheers

Site Link

Had the4 same problem.

Big thing was to link the earth on the relay to the positive on the relay!

Let me know if this dosen't help and I'll stick my head under the bonnet to clarifiy my memory,

scott.

hey champ, most new cars switch to earth, much less wiring etc for the makers.

Its easy enough, just set up the relay to switch to earth, instead of switching with a 12v positive. So wire the power circuit as per standard, run 12v constant to the positive side of the latching coil, and run the ground side to the high beam wire. (when you identify it LOL) Make sure you have the right wire as some set-ups have the headlight feeds ground when the vehicle is shut off. If this is the case just run a second relay which is switched on by the aux circuit to feed the latching coil.

So when lowbeams are on, 12v pos on both sides of latching coil - null circuit, switch high beams on, coil grounds and energises and bingo lots of light, EASY EH !!! lol

cheers mate

ps - give me a call if you get stuck.

The Hilux uses Negative switching so the wiring for the spotlights is as follows for the Hilux:

Relay ports:
30 - battery +
86 - battery +
87 - Spotties
85 - Rear of headlight, red wire with yellow stripe.

I wired up 1 HID and 1 XGT Lightforce and the work a treat.

No Problems - just to add - i also upgraded the globes in the standard lights to the Phillips - Vision Plus - 50% more light. It made a massive diiferance as i found the standard globes where very ordinary. I also have a LC100 and did same with those Globes. (and did same for the BA ute i had). The only thing - with the LC100 i often get flashed with the new Globes - spoke to a couple of people on UHF (Trucks) and they all said it was that the lights seemed high or on High beam - just bright..............just something to be aware of.

Cheers,
Geoff
