Hi,
Could anyone help me. I am about to buy one of these, low mileage. Could I put a turbo on it and would it be worth putting power steering on it. $5300. Also it has road tyers on it. What are the best tyres for comercial handyman work. Not offroad!
I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks

Dont waste your money on a turbo for this old thing. If it is in good order & low ks
it may last for years. Turbo it & it will last 10 minutes. I dont know about power steering, probably not available. Try Firestone Firehawk tyres, good price & wear
well. Most important find dipstick & fondle daily!!!. Good Luck with it.

apparently the gearbox/transfer case on the 720's is extremely easy to mate to the back of a V6 commodore engine if that is of any interest to you

Yes would agree with Rossco i thought the biggest prob with these vehicles was what was attached after the gear box.

Mate for $5300 buy yourself a late model HJ60 Landcruiser.
The 720 Datto diesel is/was a dog. Limited front wheel travel, slow as buggery and generally a prick to drive out bush.
My opinion
Cheers

Steve.
The 720 is a rust bucket, be very careful, look for signs of fresh paint, the roof can blow of after a bump cracks the bog, if you roll it your dead because there is no strength in rust. I had one brake in half when lifted it with the
fork. Eric.

Forget it. I had one. Looked the works.... but my mates had Hiluxes. They ALWAYS out performed me with smaller motors.
Just don't do it.

Mate of
mine made up a 25l
tank under the bonnet and ran straight vege oil in his 720 diesel. Keeping the oil
tank under the bonnet meant he could run solid fats and the engine bay heat would melt it quickly, enabling a quick swap from the start up fuel - dinoD.
I had a 720 2WD petrol King Cab ute and remember momentarily considering the diesel version, but was turned off by the amazingly low power output. My 1800cc 720 did the Katharine, Hooker
Creek, Tanami, Alice and then the GCR twice in the early 1980's without too much grief.
$5300 seems like an awful lot of money for one of these of that age, no matter what kms.

G day ,
I have had 2 of these datto 720 & honestly i think there a great little truck .
The first one owned was a 2wd 5 sp pet eng & i done over 60,000k in this rig with only basic servicing . the 4wd was a diesle & was a little underpowerd but kept going & going & going . i used it for shooting & a couple of trips with no probs these utes have one of the best front ends for genral use i have ever come accros. dont bother with the turbo but do put a set of extractors on aswell as a big
bore exhurst & a after market air filter the improvement is
well worth it . i dont think you will be upset with one of these rigs (by the way they eat a lolux in 4x4in stock form) anyway there a tuff no muck around 4x4 & not to bad on fuel either .
666toy (wish i never sold
mine top shooting truck)
