giday all
the BP web site recomends vanelis c6 global plus 10w-40w for the 3.0ltd engine, this is not semi-synthetic as recomended by nissan.
BP have a 5w-40w full synthetic, both meet the acea b3 standard.
is the 5w-40w to thin on start up for our conditions in australia(the 5w is calculated at -25c).also if iuse the full synthetic and needed a top is it okay to top up with mineral oil if no synthetic avaliable.
the reason i ask about the two oils is i can get either for no cost to me.
so what do youse reckon which one
cheers to all
toohey.

toohey,
Best not to mix synthetic with a normal mineral based oil, you were lucky to find the Global Plus I work for BP and I struggle. I run a 10w-40 full synthetic in
mine, now I've got past my oil leak saga everything is rosy. When I took the engine apart it was spotless, looked like new I was very encouraged by this and pleasantly surprised. OEM's recommend the 5w-30 which is not a "normal" viscosity, usually 5w-30, 10w-40 or a 20w-50. Companies make other grades don't get me wrong, loads actually. For the conditions here in my opinion a 10w-40 will be fit for purpose. If there's no synthetic available then you have to use what you have to use. I take couple of litres of oil when I travel to top up etc. Being a Nissan and being super reliable I don't usually have to top up between changes hence I take only a minimal amount

Toohey,
I use Royal Purple because I'm the WA distributor. For me it's just fine. Other who also use it seem to continue to use it. Sorry for the advertising but you asked.

Hi toohey,
The obligatory requirement for the 3.0ltd engine is a CF rating, the BP is a CG/CH rating. According to
Mobil the detergents are different in CF and CG, CH.
Mobil and Castrol have these oils.
Mobil Synth is available at Auto Shops and K Mart.
If you take a look at the BP oil recommendations on their web site they make a mention of Manufacturers "concern".
The Nissan oil appears to be a Castrol oil.
Ring the
Mobil Technical help line and discuss your concerns they are most helpful.
If I was rich I would use
Mobil 1, $120 an oil change is a bit beyond the pale.
cheers

BP C6 Global plus is semi synthetic and the one to use in the 3 litres.
BP C6 Global is not semi synthetic.

I have to disagree with some of the comments in this post.
Why can’t you mix synthetic and mineral oil? That’s exactly what semi synthetic oil is!
5 weight oil isn’t too thin for the ZD30. It is what Nissan recommend for the Patrol in Europe and the UK, but we should be using a 40 or 50Deg oil and not 30. This just covers a wider range than the Nissan oil.
Personally after seeing so many ZD30’s fail that use the “right” Nissan oil, I would stay away from it. There are many better oils on the market and fully synthetics are the best if you can cop the cost.
As long as the oil you’re using is CF and not CG, you’re safe, but synthetic is always going to be better than mineral. I use Mobil1 5W/50 and have for some time, but it is expensive.
Use the 5W/40 Synthetic as long as it's CF rated.

Have to agree with all you say. Manufacturer recommendations are always the min required and not necessarily the best, otherwise why upgrade anything (shocks, springs, filter systems, Diffs etc..) Oils are no different, can you imagine what would happen if the "recommendation" was for full syn at $140 an oil change.
Personally I use castrol edge full syn 0-40

Hi Bob,
Just curious what you think of the Castrol Edge, do you notice a quieter engine on cold starts.
I have noticed a definite improvement with the Mobil1, quieter, smother engine operation.

Yes on cold starts the oil light goes out and the rattle stops much quicker as
well as staying smoother and quieter for the whole change period. I have always changed my oil at 8000k and would notice a difference in noise and smoothness at each change ( was using castrol magnatec since new for first 50k now done 70k -2001 ZD30 ) I now do not notice any difference after oil change.
Last change was done after 10k trip towing 2000kg van Syd to
Normanton across gulf to
Mataranka and back through Alice and motor was still running just as quiet and smooth as when I left.
Have also just blocked EGR and it feels much better as
well (only done 300km yet).

Thanks Bob, so I’m not imagining it then.
I do my 10K servicing using Mobil1, but have let the Nissan dealer do the major ones 40 & 80K. Now I’ve just done it again (87K) and immediately noticed an improvement.
Had the EGR blocked for about 2000k’s and I think I’ll leave it that way. As
well as a small torque increase, it lowered EGT’s also. I also lowered the boost slightly to compensate, but I’m still in the testing stages, so it’s too early to make a definitive comment although it does look promising.

DO NOT MIX SYNTHETIC AND MINERAL OILS.
This was done where I work and the lubricating oil for two big bronze bearings that support a 25 tonne roller which help support a 400 tonne kiln turned to jelly. The result a weeks lost production while we changed out the bearings and oil at $22k an hour lost production. I know there may be differences between the lubricating oil on a kiln bearing and engine oil, but is it worth the risk?
Cheers
Snowy
