We've been in Tassie since the end of August and we're having a ball! Despite the predictions of our friends and relos in Qld who said, "Yer mad! You'll freeze in Tasmania at this time of year", we're surviving very well and the weather has generally been much milder than we expected. But it's certainly variable: one day it's blowing hot northerly gales, whipping up wild bushfires - and a few days later there are snow falls in the high country, severe frosts and hail in the farming districts!

So far we've just 'scratched the surface' with a bit of exploring along the north coast and north-east. On the way over on the last voyage of "Spirit III", we bought the book "4wd Tasmania" and it's been a brilliant guide to the many great 4WD tracks around the various regions. The highlight so far would have to be the brilliant drive through the dunes and beaches of St. Albans Bay, west of Bridport.

We've also enjoyed many drives along forest roads and tracks in the north-east. So refreshing to be able to explore down forestry tracks with encountering endless "Restricted Access" signs like we see in Queensland - and the hassle of having to get the increasingly difficult to obtain "Permit to Traverse" just to enjoy 'our' State Forests.

Twelve years ago we sampled Tassie via a ten day blast around the island on a motorcycle, in company with a dozen other bikes, enjoying many of the best biking roads in the country. Little did we realise that this gem of a place also offers so much brilliant, accessible off-bitumen touring too. And the scenery is just astonishing - over just about every crest in the road or highway is another picture postcard vista. Do we sound impressed - you betcha! We can't wait to get amongst the tracks and trails of the wild west and far south.

Sounds tempting.(it should, we lived there all our lives until last Feb) and will have to explore it some more when we finally head back.Having lived there for 30 years I have to say we have seen more of the big island above it than Tassie itself.I guess its the old" dont know what you got until its gone" case.
That being the case, up here we are exploring and guys i work with have lived here all their lives and Im now telling them about the secret out of way spots here.
Very different spots but both great to explore.

I think you're right, Nick. We lived in Brisbane for years and saw most of the good places in and around when friends or relies came to visit!

Talk about "out of the icebox and into the fire" - Tassie to Kununurra in one fell swoop! Wotcha doin' up that way?

By the way, in my original post above, it should read "WITHOUT encountering endless "Restricted Access" signs like we see in Queensland".

Have you been through a summer in the wild north-west yet? We had 45C on our way through Fitzroy Crossing (both ways) late last year going to/from Broome. On the way back in November it was still 36C outside our van when we got back after dinner at the Resort, at 9:30pm! Thank God for air con!

HAve passed through three times before and loved the place so decided to move up for a year or two(while kids are young and movable).Big move but its a great place here.
We are currently in our first build up,been 38-39deg c for a couple of weeks now with humidity just coming in.Like you say, thankgoodness for A/C.Talking to friends back home they are all sitting in front of the fire trying to keep warm.I think I like this heat more than the cold.
We actually come from Chudleigh, you may have called into the Honey Shed/place or near Mole Creek/Deloraine area.

hi, just a quickie just in case you are near. Mole Creek Caravan Park ( really just a camping area, with some powered hats and no permanents). Talk about Tennysons's babbling brook. Me and the Mrs were just sitting in the tent door listening to the babble when a platypus poked its head around the tent flap, eyed us off for 30 seconds and went back to the steam. Special place.
