Today we did a certified 4wd course, after this we stopped at a carpark for some refreshments, reversing out of the carpark I heard a knock from under the car

for some reason I checked to see if the 4wd lever was de selected, and it seemed to be

I selected 4HL and drove forward, usually a 4wd light will light up on the dash...but nothing, I selected 4L, first gear, drove forwards and it felt as if 4L 1st was selected but still no light, I have checked the fuse and it is still in good condition

I have assumed that we were driving home normally when I pulled into the driveway and turned sharp, this is when the car came to a abrupt holt with the front wheels feeling like they had locked up, once the wheels were straight though they freed up

Im driving a 90 series Prado with constant 4wd

what has happened???

steve075,

Have you got a centre diff lock?

Is it a switch as in 120 series prado.

Did you disengage it as well as putting the transfer case is 4H?

I have a 90 series...when 4HL is selected the centre diff automatically engages, there is no switch

The 120 Prado centre diff is locked by moving the tranfer case lever to the first position. There is no switch like the 80 and 100 series Landcruisers.
I can't remember with the 90 series Prado.

I'm not familiar with the engage/disengage set-up on the prado but it sounds like it has not disengaged 4wd(centre diff still locked)
when you turn sharp on hard surface all the wheels turn at different speeds, the sensation of feeling resistance only after turning sharp is called wound up(would of thought the course touched on this subject). If you have de-selected centre diff lock sometimes wound-up will keep diff lock engaged until load has come off drive line. The best way to ensure dis-engagement is to rock back slightly taking load of drive line
If this doesn't work there may be a loose wire around transfer area
your post indicated the 4wd drive light has not illuminated after selecting 4wd so i would be looking for some plugs that appear to be swinging in the breeze around the g/box transfer area
my bet is your prob is a quick fix if you spend a bit of time underneath investigating plugs/loose wiring, the cause will become obvious

Thats the thing Shane, they did talk about wind up

Once the course was over I disengaged 4wd and the light in the dash went off, it wasnt till later that I heard the knock while reversing when I re checked that 4wd was not engaged, this is when the light wouldnt re appear

I just hope I havnt done too much damage

Steve
can you tell me how your prado goes from road going highrange to offroad 4wd highrange
I'm assuming that yours is constant 4wd that has a transfer lever which has 4H-n-4L engraved on it
there should also be a button/switch that say's centre diff lock
when you say you heard a knock, what sort of knock? was it one off, or re-occuring ? going striaght or turning
maybe best to wait for other prado owners to offer an explination, some one would of come across this for sure

you are correct Shane,it is constant 4wd, with the lever as you explained

There is definatly no button for a CDL, I queried this at Toyota at a service interval and he explained that when 4wd does get selected,CDL is automatically engaged

The knock was more of a clunk when reversing and turning at the same time, I tried immediatly to hear it again,by stopping, changing gear then selecting reverse again but it wouldnt clunk again, after driving 10k or so I tried again for a clunk and heard another but same as before it wouldnt repeat

I was told on another forum to lift either end to see if it is still stuck in 4wd,

The front wheels once in the air were easy to spin(in neutral)but the back were very hard to spin

if that helps?????
