Gday,
Can some of you good people out there with genuine experience please let me know of eng mods that have made a big differance the there sluggish 3f .I am not really interested in fitting a v8 but i am considering a supercharger (small). I am not trying to make this thing a power house but just a little better. Has anyone changed the cam & what lift & duration . This engine is fitted to a fj62 auto . Allso has anyone done the ann-beadell hiway recently ? any help welcomed

A cam would help, but it all comes down to what is available for this engine.
If you could get aftermarket
Cam
Roller rockers
New valve sprigs
Intake manifold
Extractors and good exhaust as
well as freeing the air induction system up you could see some quite nice gains
Generally speaking a bigger cam is pointless without a better flowing intake manifold and a better flowing intake manifold is pointless without a good flowing induction system, all the above is pointless if your exhaust system is restrictive, what do the 3F heads flow like? As you will be fighting a up
hill battle if the heads don’t flow enough to make the most of everything else. What I am saying is everything need’s to be able to work together.
A super charger will give you the best bang for your buck, Even if the flow rates of everything else is chit pushing compressed air down it’s throat will make things happen.
Cheers.

thanks for your reply,
the info is great . As for roller rockers that might be getting a little carried away but good induction & extraction is critical as you said. what i was trying to find out is the do's & donts for this particular eng ( try & save myself a few dollars)but i will start with a free flowing exh & headers . the induction could prove difficult as only a genuine toyota manifold is avail & as i still have the original carb on . i may swap for a 350cfm hol but not sure on that one just yet. (i run lpg & pet so not sure if a holley will be of any benifit) Are there any better carbs than the holley for off road use ? thanks again 666toy

I don’t know allot in regards to carburettors a little before my time, id do know holly make a specialty ‘off-road” carburettor so it might be worth looking into.
You can always get a bit of a polish job done on the original manifold to get some smoother flow.
If you want to go fully custom you could do a double carb set up on it or even a 6 carb set up, I have seen that done on a early 90’s Ford 4.0ltre 6 it looked wicked but it was a race car
a 150HP shot of dry NOS will get make the old 3F up and Boogie..... right out of the engine bay LOL

a 150 hp shot of laghing gas in a 3f will send the pistons to the moon & the bloody crank to hell lmao. a polish will help true but i am only trying to get 30-40pc extra out of this wagon to keep it reliable for long trips so i doubt it really would be worth it. i for got to mention that the exh is sub 2" so i think half the prob lies there . i will look into the holley your talking about though thanks .

g'day
my uncle spent $7k on his 3f and it boogied, pushed a troopie to 190 and was good for 6500 rpm. Just like the previous post said, there is no magic fix,you really have to make a lot of small improvments to gain any kind of result
dunno what s/charger you have in mind (spintex will want most of $6k) but personally I wouldn't stuff around with modified 3f
bite the bullet GET A V8!

making a supercharger sit on an engine will be a battle(and then making it work!)as
well as tuning,fuel mixtures, , , , good luck
what my uncle did was done 10-12 years ago and the motor was near new and he had it sent to melb and rebuilt by some engine builders that specialise in race engines
I cannot remember exactly what was done(it was extensive) but it did include balancing and blueprinting the 3f and that is what gave it's high reving ability
one thing I didn't mention was the fuel economy(lack thereof) and it didn't seem to last anywhere near as long as other(but he had some fun)

I have just had my 3f carby looked at ( 1985 auto landcruiser)
A mechanic who had the same car back then said if I had the main fuel jets increased by 2 thou I would relieve a lot of the problems with a sluggish motor.
The jets have been bored out and I have certainly had a big improvement in the performance of the car. I don't need to "push " the car now , but need to take it easy , goes allong the expressway at 125mph now , no worries . When I mean not having to push it I mean it really goes ??? , I have to just touch the accelerator
When he did the carby he said in the previous service to the carby the gasket had not been fitted correctly and the acceleration pump port was covered and a few other ports were covered , so need a new gasket.
If a couple of weeks l be having a new carby kit fitted and the tappets done.
Boring out the fuel jets is an easily reversable decision , why I did it , as you only need to replace the jets if it does not work .
Hard to know if I use more fuel yet as the extra work needs to be done . On the 250k trip back from whwere the mechanic was , I used 16L/100k up 1L on normal , but was travelling at about 10kmh more than normal . The fuel consumption is really just how far you put the foot down .
I think it is worth a try

I had an FJ62 Sahara Gas/Petrol. I fitted extractors and 2.5 inch exhaust and that made a noticeable difference to power and smoothness, same economy. The economy you are getting is pretty good for these things.

Look, there is no nice way to say this....it will take big money to get small gains....the most will come from a 060 thou shave of the head, and porting...but why??? trade it on a 4.5 80 series, selling for between 8 and 10k these days...
You will spend that on a supercharger and a few new motors at least....
If you want to keep the old girl, do the head up, put extracters and electronic ignition and the new main jets, and you will end up with a reliable, legal ride you can take anywhere...

thanks dozer,
not interested in tradeing this old darling in yet i just bought it !!!
as for the 80 series yeh there nice but to bloody complicated for extreme isolation. at least the K.i.s.s principal still is there with the 60 series & no rotten computers!!! that is why i chose this old girl (but i still got a few comforts for the trouble & strife otherwise i would have bought a fj/hj 45 nothing more rugged than that !!. lol )i thinki will go down the norm path you outlined carb ex etc but thank you & might see ya on the tracks soon 666toy
