Hi,
I am interested on buying a Waeco CA-35, but not sure if it is a real fridge with a compressor or is one of those warmer/coolers. It is advertised as a fridge.
Any info will be appreciated.

You could have answered your own question by clicking on the Waeco link created in your own post & then navigating to here Site Link

It has no compressor, it is a 3 way, gas/12v/240v, absorbtion style fridge like a Companion.

Hi Pelesino

Best to stick to a 40L Engel or Evakool 50L in that size range.

The Waeco CA-35
CA-35 three-way absorption cooler

Boundless independence for all outdoor enthusiasts! This low-priced absorption cooler accepts gas as well as alternating current from the power socket or direct current from the 12-volt cigarette lighter. The cooling capacity can be regulated up to a maximum level of 25°C below ambient.

.... is not a true fridge.

Good for some applications but will not perform as well as a compressor fridge.

Regards Derek.

It would seem the CA-35 is a 3 way fridge:
" target="EOF" class="lbg">www.waeco.com.au/news.asp?id=149
which means it will operate from; gas, 12V DC and 240V AC

NB. My understanding is that it does not come with a gas regulator or hose so add $50 to the price.

I have owned an absorption fridge (CA-35 type – Finch) for a few years and find it suits my needs well. It will not freeze (normally) and takes some time to reduce the temp when you put a lot of warm stuff into them - 6 pack, wine cask etc. expect 12 hours to pull the temp down. However they will run for a long time from a gas cylinder - maybe 2 weeks from a 4kg cylinder? They _MUST_ be level to operate efficiently (buy a spirit level from the $2 shop) but if you camp in one spot for a week or more are hard to beat. They do not perform well on 12V and should only be operated in this mode for short periods (a few hours and make sure the engine is running as they use about 6A+) .

Horses for courses: if you're on the move each day or two buy a compressor fridge, if you stay put for three days or more an absorption fridge is hard to beat.

I am also interested in buying a fridge / freezer and was considering the Waeco 60 litre. What are the pros and cons (other than price) compared to say, an Engel? Our main use will be for camping where we will travel to a camp site and stay for a few days, max probably ten.

The Engels are no good at all, something like 80% of them have to be returned for warranty work whereas Waeco have consistently had a return rate below 75%. On the other hand Engels will, reliably, maintain a temperature down to +8C whereas a Waeco will be hard pressed to reach +12C. Then again the Waeco has better power consumption drawing only 9 amps against the Engel's 14 amps.

My preference is for an F&P E522B, it’s a little larger, true, but it does suit my needs well and… well… you do get what you pay for….

Mike!

I am amazed that the fish aren't biting today. Do you use expanding bait like that in rivers as well?

The Engel 60l is a good fridge...but try lifting it when full...or for that matter empty....damn heavy compared to a Waeco , which is also a good fridge...had the Engel , now have a 50l Waeco....much, much easier to move around...cheers
