A change of response from Nissan re the cause of early 3.0 litre failures.
The explanation from Nissan has always been the lack of oil capacity, supposedly fixed by increasing the amount of oil in the sump.
This reason was even provided to the consumer affairs Victoria following a customer enquiry.
Using the clever composition of an E mail number by one of our Forum friends, Nissan japan was contacted recently.
No response for several weeks then a phone call from Australias head office saying they would respond to the enquiry.
The letter received states that "The engine fitted to your vehicle is an upgraded engine fitted with a new design of pistons, therefore you can have full confidence in its long term durability".
Has the truth finally emerged ?

Does anyone know what the original sump capacity was, as mine is an 8th month 2000 model and the handbook says 8.2 ltrs with filter and it is the original book that came with the vehicle.?

Thanks RosscoH

Fourstall2000,
I had a 2000 GU 3.0 Nissan that did the motor in. I was informed at the time that it was not just the oil capacity but also the number of sensors around the engine, from memory they went from 5 to 8 ?? and the new motor came with an upgraded loom.
I was also told at that time that part of the problem was the piston composition which at that time was upgraded when the replacement motor was fitted.
From memory again I think the original oil capacity was around 5.6 litres ??

Old Johno, that now makes you the 16th contributor to this forum who has suffered the dreaded ZD 30 terminal engine syndrome. Then you have the 2 Nissan club members, 4 off Outerlimits and 11 off Patrol4x4.com. Admittedly some may well have double posted on some of the forums but they are all different usernames.
I wonder just how many we will end up with.
Regards Andrew.

Nick
It's obvious - they werent counting diff/suspension failures. They would be inundated if so.

The magic change of oil capacity - THEY SHORTENED THE DIPSTICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excuse # 1,200,001 as to why they are dying.. each one must have its own reason for dying.

Hi there

Have been reading with interest your comments about the 3.0 litre motor.
My Dec 2001 build motor blew up on the 13th October 2006. No. 2 cylinder lost compression and all pistons were cracked. The Patrol is 2,500 km outside extended warranty.

The Nissan dealer contacted Nissan Melbourne and they have agreed to fix the motor at no cost to me.

You mentioned in ID 25268 about writing to head office and getting a reference number for anticipated problems. Could you give me some details of the address. as a friend of mine has a 2000 build 3.0 litre with 180,000 km and is now wondering how long it will be before his drops a piston.

Thanks

More evidicen IMHO that the EGR is to blame.

Pistons being made from more robust compounds and more oil to keep them cool because of the rediculous heat that the cylinders directecting the the path of the EGR valve are exposed to.

I still recokn if you own a ZD30, bypass the EGR.
