Hi.

Just put a set of front wheel bearings in a 90 mod rodeo. I was quoted $74.00

per side from repco, picked up a set 1km down the road at auto one for $44.00 a side. They had made in Japan stamped on them, so quality should be alright.

When in a hurry I"ve never been oneto drive around to save a few cents hear or there, but think i've just changed my mind!.

Cheers Axle.

I got a valve spring replaced on my ford and supplied parts myself leaving them to supply rocker gasket.
1 X rocker gasket $110
Thought these blokes are having a go at me so rang another ford dealer.
1 X rocker gasket $117
local spare parts same rubber gasket $23

Once got quoted $1150 for starter motor for my 92 hilux 2.8 ended up reco at $210

be even more wary of auto shops selling the same product with different brands on them for different prices!?!
some examples
- battery terminal cleaners EXACTLY the same in 3 different packeges lion and 2 others
- Safety seal kits same thing although I chose the one i did because although the contents were identical it had a decent carry case
many more examples of different companys importing the same stuff whacking there brand on it and charging different amounts

The mark up on some off these imported items must be incredible! allowing them to play around like this! probably why so many different auto shops springing up in different regions.

Spare parts ................. you think your getting ripped off by fuel costs......... Lost my fuel cap for my rodeo ute (lockable one) ............. Rang Holden $203.00, the bloke said, and we don't have one in stock will have to order it for you ........... a polite no thanks was in order.

Now thats a RIP OFF ......... so now on the hunt for a 2nd hand one.

mate,

if its the plastic threaded one, same as the welbody, I got mine for $23 from a little auto shop in Denmark of all places. Look for an aftermarket one if you havent already, Cheap as chips, but mine is a later model, so yours might be different.

Alternatively, there is one lying on the side of the road in Denmark WA which could get you out of trouble LOL

cheers

Have I got a few good ones for yas,
Landcruiser radiator fan hydrostatic clutch. Rang toyota, 575 dollars. Rang a mechanic mate who gets their stuff from repco, 272 dollars. Asked him for the relube kit and thought id have a go at repacking the old one. Was still going to cost over 100 for the bearings and grease. Then i rang a mate who works for auto one. 139 dollars. Rang back my mechanic mate and asked him for his advice and his jaw dropped wen he heard the auto one price and said "buy it!"

Its worked fine so far.

Had a go kart, it uses three self aligning bearings on the rear drive shaft. Rang the local bearing shop, 54 bux each, so it was going to cost over 160 dollars. Rang NSK bearings, only marginally cheaper. Then did a search for brisbane bearing shops and found one at coopers plains, rang them and said to the bloke the bearing numbers and he says "oh the go kart bearings" and later said you dont need three, just use two, the third is not needed, and then i noticed many other guys dont have three either. Then told me the bearings were 19 dollars each :)

The latest thing thats happened to me, sorta similar, had to set up my rig with two spare wheels for cape york. Tried to biuld my own dual tyre carrier, had problems, so rang TJM and was quoted nearly 3 grand for a whole kit installed. Jaw dropped and then I thought "hey a boat is worth that and i can put the spare on the boat" so i ran out and bought a boat for 3k and welded a spare tyre bracket onto the side of the drawbar. :)

cheers

In defense of Repco, I had to replace my Jackaroo fuel pump and their price for a Bosch unit was $117. Bursons wanted $300.

But longJohn, you will need all three bearings on your Kart. I speak as a 10 year go-karting veteran (where I made a small fortune; by starting with a big one !! )
Don't let a bearing supplier tell you you don't need it. You might not with a J but for anything faster like an S or Rotax or Leopard you will get too much grip with the third bearing left out, especially in warmer areas.

My son won the 2000 Vic Open in Rotax Light so we have some credibility!

Gerhardp1 : true, but this is dirt karts :P I probably should have mentioned that. On dirt having the centre bearing left out gives the rear a little more traction and of course on dirt...there is never enough of that. Or so the theory goes anyway. I raced my dirt kart only several times before it hurt my back too much, hence why I sold it. Great fun tho!!

Ah yes - only drove a dirt kart once, the engine looked like an S on the outside but had a serious amount of porting done, so it had some punch. Found it strange to drive compared to sprint kart since there are no cornering G forces on the dirt, just no grip! So yes, you definately don't want a stiff setup for those conditions.

Pity about the back - mine's still OK but I'm too old for the Rotax now - reflexes are too slow and hence it gets a bit dangerous. I could run a J I suppose, but the lack of any power is no fun :)
