I am going to have a go at catching Redclaw next month in central Qld, can anyone tell me what baits work to catch them?

they like potatoe and pumpkin that has been baked in the coals, and if you don't feel like cooking for them, they also like cantalope.

that said, i often just use lumps of my badly baked bread.

We don't have cantalope in Australia :-)

Mike,

We use the really small cans of cat food. The fish variety. Just puncture it in a couple of places to let the juices flow once in the trap.

To attach the can to the (I assume opera house trap) pierce another small hole thru the lid to the outer wall of the can, side a cable tie thru it an attach the can to the trap. Throw it in the still waters of your chosen stream and leave overnight.

Works a treat.

Just be when you it, as we have also caught the occasional snake. They get really upset having been caught in an Opera House trap.

Just love fresh cooked Red claw.

Good red clawing

Cheers
Richard

Yep, this works, I used this at the Hinze dam last year. Was Snappy Tom cans for memory (they were probably ultra-cheap knowing me!).

I take it you are talking about Fairbairn Dam Mike? What's the latest situation with redclaw there? I was told there wasn't many left due to the low water levels, unlimited amount of redclaw being caught, and lack of weed to feed on.....would be nice to know if that is true.

Part boiled potato is my recipe. Also pumpkin and rock melon.

Bread tends to get too many small fish.

I know of others that use the cat food, but I haven't tried it yet as the spuds seem to work OK..

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions. I will have 4 opera house pots so I will try a few different baits and see what works. I won't be using soap for bait though. I don't use soap in creeks or lakes for washing either and hope others do the same. Don't destroy what you come to enjoy.

I also used catfood at Tinaroo MIke. You can buy the little single serve foil packets for about 60c each. One sachet would last about a week. Up until using catfood, I used semi cooked spuds. we would get about 2 Redclaw/trap/day. Switched over to the catfood and wooohoo. about 10/trap/day.

The secret wepon is sweet potato. Since we started using it we consistantly caught bigger redclaw.

Used to live on Lake Tinaroo and all the baits mentioned worked for us, caught pleanty, everyone has a favorite bait. We probably did best with the catfood.

Only time we did not catch any was when the pots were raided, it was a real problem. Hard to understand why you would steal someone elses catch rather than having a go yourself?

Have fun, good luck.

A hand full of cat food, tied up in pieces of an old stocking so when you're done for the night you can just pull it out of the trap and into the bin. This allows you to save money by buying a larger and therefore more economical tin of food.
