I have the BFG A/T on my Triton... Very quiet, very happy... Mine are 225/75-16, perhaps if you have wider tyres on the paj, that's where the noise is coming from.

They will quiten down but your pressures are too low I have had 4 sets now on 4x4 and I am currently running 48 psi front & rear 99 GU patrol mine have done 93000km and still around 5000 to 10000k left in them all other vehicles have been the around the same if you run them too low pressure you will wear the edges off.

So enjoy them as you have fitted the best tyre on the market in my opion, So safe driving.By the way I dont have anything to do with tyres exept driving on them and I only have the best thats available fitted to my patrol.

DJ!! I had a set of BFG'S fitted at 51,000ks and now just about to the legal wear limit but still going at 189,000ks. sounds unbelievable but true. Previous 2 set on the older patrol got 115,000ks and 120,000. great wearing tyres and i never look after them.. Michael

Thats great mileage Michael mine have towed 2.5 ton van most of the km so they wear a bit more on the rear > I now keep the pressures up to get a bit more km as they scrub off the edges off if too low was runnin 42psi for the first 50000k and found the edges wearing but now getting better wear although will still wear edges off also handles a lot better with van weight and diesel economy..I have been told that 50-55 psi is not uncommen by Tyrepower.

I have had several new sets of BFG's and the are mainly noisy on acceleration for the first few thousand kilometers. After that, quiet and no probs... Its normal.. Michael

Hi Mark
Unfortunatley that is the price you pay for traction offroad, it's pretty hard to have the " perfect tyre " in a A/T. they are a long lasting compound to are a bit harder than most. I have got up to 90 thou twice before replacing

Mine were lnever excessivly loud though, what pressures are you running ?

Not sure what model you have but with my previous NM the Bridgestone D693's were fairly quiet. When I went to Cooper STC's they were very noisy and I put it down to the monocoque chassis.

Maybe the wheel bearings are all shot ;-)))
I've got 235/85/16's on the 'cruiser and don't find them noisy. Perhaps the diesel engine drowns them out....
I don't need to turn the music up excessively....

I just went from Cooper ATR to Goodyear Wrangler MT/R and that was a whole step up in noise again! ATR's were very quiet on tar (I have them on a second set of rims for long on-road trips interstate) but the MT/R's definately are much noiser on the tar.

On gravel roads the reverse is true. ATR's would thump and bump a fair bit while the MT/R's feel and sound like they are the ATR's on tarmac. Awesome offroad tyre.

Dunno about the BFG's but given they are not THAT aggressive and are an AT style then they should not be too bad. I did notice that the MT/Rs got a bit quieter after about 500km when all the little furry nodule things wore off!

I know a couple of people running the BFG AT's and they have not complained of excessive noise. Might pay to check with your tyre dealer and check the alignment/balance/pressure combination is all correct.

Cheers
Muddy

I had the BFG's once before and hated them. Very noisy for the whole time I had them.
They are not excatly A/T's but I went for Cooper ST's after that and have loved them ever since. Also I don't know if it's me getting better as a driver or the tyres but I had 6 flats in the time I had the BFG's 4 off raod and 2 on road. The cooper's have lever let me down, and that includeds a 16000km simpson, gibson and great sandy desert crossing and around the top of Australain back to Brissy. also a heap of harder off road stuff. I find I also seem to have alot more traction as well.
This is on a 80 series, and the tyres were the same size in all respects. I have done about 30,000km on these tyres and they hardly look worn in.

Are you sure the fitter put them on the right wheels and not back to front?

AT's are non directional , so it wouldn't matter. I regularly change mine back to front , inside/outside, reverse on the rim, any whichway for even wear.

How do you put them on back to front? As a non directional tyre it doesn't matter which way they go on.

It seems the NM/NP transmit alot of tyre noise through the body. I've got Cooper ST's on a NP and they are quite noisy and it doesn't get any quieter as they get older but you do get used to it.

Hi Mark,

I am on my second set of BFG AT's and am really happy with them.

I get great mileage out of them and they seem quite good off road.

Noise is very quiet so can't complain about that.

I noticed you have come from HT tyres so I would think it is fair to expect that AT tyres will be noisier than these in most instances.

Hope you can get it sorted to your satisfaction.

I have BFG ATs on an NM Pajero - the noise is noticeable because you've switched from a quiet HT, but you a) get used to it and b) they do seem to quiten a little after the first thousand or two. I had two new ones fitted a while back to replace two worn ones, and the noise increase from the new ones was distinct.

I think the Pajero body transmits a lot of road noise.

I was going to say that my only criticism of the Pajero is poor sound proofing, and a few here have proved it.

I reckon that they quiten after the first 1000ks or so because you get used to it.
The extra noise from the BFG AT's gets my kids to sleep in the car quicker they like the extra noise that the wheels make and they know that when Dad puts those wheels on that they are going bush. So they need as much sleep in the car as possible to make sure that they don't miss anything when we finally get of the black stuff.

I am assuming you had some crappy Grandtreks on before? Anyway i have done about 30 on my BFG AT's and hope to get another 30. (I don't like running them down to barely legal tread as i hate punctures) Anyway never noticed any noise, so maybe something is not right????

markcas,
I have 245.75.r16 MTR's for offraod and 235.70.r16 bfg AT's for road / day trips.
The stock tyre - S1 discovery is a 235.70.r16 Michelin.
As you mention from your mates lux, the Mtr's are noticibly noisy with the windows down, but fine with windows up. Noise is most noticeable on smooth tarmac surfaces, not that noticeable on stoned tar roads.
The AT's are barely more noticeable that the OEM tyres - but they are slightly more noticeable - certainly nothing like the mtr's.
For you to have excessive cabin noise sounds odd - pitty no other paj owners with bfg at's have commented.
The AT's are quiet on sealed roads due to the sipe cuts - all the little non full depth cuts in the tread block (the cuts the I find makes the tyres chip excessively).

Might be a bit of bad luck if the tyre tread pattern setting up a harmonic with the chassis/cabin - expensive exercise but other AT's with a different pattern may have less noise. My guess would this would be more pronounced at a specific speed. Is the noise more produced at specific speeds or does increase all the time as vehicle speed increases?

When I got my MTR's I read advice that the tyres get noisier as they get older - I also found that to be the case.

Paul.

A/Ts will always be noisier than H/Ts, dont stress, you will be safe in the knowledge that you will leave H/Ts for dead in the bush, esp if you use the trick of letting your tyres down.
I have run all different types of tyres, all have their cute noises at different speeds, in the early days, it made the gearbox noise more enjoyable. I am of the opinion that the noiser the tyre the better they are offroad, just try a set of Simex Jungle trekkers and see what you think..
Best regards
Ray

mark, I drove a paj nm for 4 years. started with oem yokohama geolandar h/t, then to geolandar a/t. a/t tyres are noisier in paj's due to its sound proofing. it makes this booming/humming noise especially at speed, even on h/t tyres on gravel road. the price of better traction imo.

could be the monocoque chasis. The noisiest vehicle i have been in wasnt my 80 running MFR supergripper tyres howlimng like a banshee it was a nissan Pulsar running standard tyres - the noise was incredible and even worse when i took my turn driving it - drove me nuts on the trip Kal to Perth and back

Hi
I had two sets of BFG's A/T's on the Jack. They were noisier than the H/T Coopers I had on the alloys but much quiter than the mud tyres. The only times I remember them humming was when they were very new with the window down and when I had been playing in the sand and I had 16psi in the tyres.
