Hi all, this is my first time on the
forum here and just wanted to ask a question. Im from WA and was wondering wether you guys think there would be a good market four the drawer systems and fridge slides etc here in
Perth. I've looked at the pricing of the ones at ARB and they are ridiculous. Im a cabinetmaker by trade and I think the cost could be close to halved without sacrificing any strength or quality. Any opinions would be great!

Mate,
Could be a great little side business. In my previous Patrol, I had a set of draws made up by a retired cabinet maker in
Brisbane and he only charge $500 which is far less than the brand names. I have a brand name in the new Patrol but it was heaps more expensive. If you make a good product then I'm sure people will buy it.....Good luck.....

if you do something on the side it may work out for you but as with all products the cost is not so much in the item itself rather than marketing and sales. Shops want a healthy markup (depends on the market and item). In the field of one of our activities an item costing $7.50 FOB factory is retailing at $80 - $110 .. our retailers want 100% markup .. factor 10 between manufacturing cost and retail price is quite common .. as a cabinet maker you know what markups you have in furniture .. I do not know whats typical in the 4WD retail market but I guess it is a lot less than 100%.
To the product: I am currently planning a new storage system in the back of my truck, but would not use timber .. alluminium only ... solid timber is too heavy.
Quite a few people seem to be happy with timber stuff but not for me ..
I guess it is a matter of research and doing a couple of prototypes ... since you have the machines and the space to work it wouldn't cost much to do .. make a few variations , make a brochure, set up a website, go to a couple of shows and you will quickly see if it works or not .. not much to loose and wouldn't take too long ...
good luck

My previous timber set is made by a Cabinet maker using Form ply was lighter than my set of Black Widow draws that I have at present. You would be surprised at the weight of even the factory draws? My Black Widows still have a full timber top..........

Formply 17mm I think ?
packet of wood screws.
bottle of PVC wood glue.
2 x metal draws $35 each....local metal fabricator.
4 x 25 x25 x 2mm gal RHS to weld on sides of draws for rollers
20 x 35 mm bearings.
20 x bolts and nylon nuts.
40 x large gal washers.
2 x trendy alloy handles for draws
2 x bolt style locks.
4 x spring loaded flush ring handles from bias boating for hatches on deck.
marine grade carpet
glue for carpet .
total cost about $250! has been bounced and shakenand, has stood up way beyond my expectations and people say it looks like a bought one, now Im sure if you want to do this on a more larger scale all the cost of material with be considerably cheaper as you will buy bulk and have templates as you do new 4BS
I say youll never never know if you dont have a go ??
good luck JTW hope I didnt rave on too much mate ( but Im proud of my draw system !!! LOL )
Regards J.B.

I got my drawers from trek tek(4wd monthly add). They were just over a grand delivered to safety bay(WA). Good quality and work
well. Just bolt into the standard tie down points on my 80 so no holes to drill or anything and can take them out in 15 minutes if I need too
