Turbo Oil Leak

Can anyone tell me if it is possible for a turbo to leak oil extensively? I purchased a Landcruiser BJ73 recently with 3B Motor and Schwitzer Turbo. After a couple of hours driving, I have oil dripping off my diff and tow bar! and specks of oil spray on the vehicle back windows. The only leaks I can see are at the turbo, the bottom of which is very oily. I also note that the air pipe that crosses the motor is weeping oil. Can turbos make a noise/vibration on the cruise? Any help appreciated Thanks.

Imstat,

Does not sound good. A turbo can leak oil and should not make a noise. A whistle noise is OK but it sounds a bit more than this.

A good turbo specialist would be the next place to take the shortie.

If you can let us know what part of the country that you are from we might be able to suggest a good place to take the vehicle.

Thanks a lot Wayne. I just purchased the vehicle this week - but I couldn't believe the extent of the oil coming out. I think I will degrease the engine and give it a run. That may give me a clue to where it is leaking. Thanks again Imstat.

Hi Imstat
Certainly sounds like the seals are stuffed. I bought a second hand turbo once, I installed it and started the vehicle with the compressor side disconnected from the inlet manifold. Noticed a LOT of oil straight away, i.e it was running out uphill with the turbo blowing the oil out. Bugger. Got it rebuilt, $700 and all was fine. Be very careful driving it, the oil leak if it is the seals in the turbo it will syphon your sump dry and you will kill the engine.
Mine was also a Schwitzer turbo, but all turbos can wear out.

Regards
Ray

Also, should be no noticeable niose or vibration from the turbo, maybe a bit of a whistle from the air intake if it is near a window like a snorkel. Turbo rebuild should include the bearings for the same price mentioned previously (this was 4 years ago) If it needs a new main shaft then you may not be able to get one, they were apparently getting a bit rare for mine when I had mine done.

Thanks Ray, I think I will go that way as the rest of the vehicle is nice and straight and a rebuild will be worthwhile. Cheer Ian

THanks for that. My turbo is high mounted and nice and easy to get at so not much drama getting it off. Thanks Imstat

One other check you can do before spending a lot of money. If you have a breather pipe coming from the rocker cover that goes into the air intake to the turbo, then check you do not have any restrictions in the in take. What happened to me was I had a Unifilter in the air box prior to having the snorkel fitted and when I seen these Unifilter snorkels socks or what ever they call them so I put one in straight away drove home and next morning a big heap of oil straight under the turbo. Went and talked to the people at MTQ and was told I should not put two let alone one oil based filters in on a turbo motor cause they suck so hard any restriction will allow them to suck from any where they can. So no oil based filters any more and no problems.
This may not be your situation but just a thought.
Cheers Bruce

There are a lot of traps...if the motor has excessive blowby, the oil that is sucked into the turbo from the rocker will leak from the crossover pipe....also, you may have a diesel leak somewhere....is the pinion leaking on the rear diff???
Something soundsamis...

Thanks Andrew, so I might have a worn motor to check out for blowby - good advice thanks . The odo says 207,000km but you know the rest about used vehicles, could be 507,000!
I cant believe oil every where under the rear of the vehicle, but it looks thin like engine oil - it is not gear oil (you know the smell)?? I think a big degrease job and clean the whole thing up will be my first job, then some short drives and lots of searching around the turbo and underneath. When I picked the vehicle up I drove about 2 1/2 hors home down the highway which gave plenty of opportunity for leaks to show up - but still its all a bit strange
THanks again, Ian
