I have a 10/93 rodeo t/diesel 2.8 which has a 2.9 amp battery drain. I disconnected the main wire coming from the alternator and the battery drain was gone.
Could the problem be faulty diodes in the alternator or the fact that the disconnected wire may have open circuited the battery drain.
Also the only ignition lights that are operating are the oil light and the glow plug light.
This problem is intermittent and seems to appear after the charging system is put under load eg two 130 watt driving lights or fridge battery discharged fairly well.
thanks in advance for any input

Sounds like you fixed your own problem.

Well done.

Regards Derek.

Hi Derek
The problem isnt fixed , I still have a battery drain, What I really need is confirmation that I have diagnosed the cause correctly ie the alternator is cactus or keep looking for the problem. I would have thought if the alternator had given up the alternator light on the dash would come on.

did you say that the glow plug light was on when you were getting the current draw?????????? Maybe you don't have a problem or have I missunderstood you?

The glow plug light only comes on with the ignition switch on whereas the battery drain is there when ever the battery is connected.

Rowdy.
What has happened is one of the exciter diodes in your alternator has been cooked and is intermittently shorting. this will give you a battery drain and also stop your charge light from working. all you have to do is replace the 3 small diodes in the alternator. Eric.

Thanks for the repliy Eric
I thought it may have been the diodes but as I'm not a auto electician I only just know enough about car electrics to be dangerous.
