Was driving to my local bush area to take my dog for a run, driving at 80km/h no problems....go into the bush 2WD road only. Come out, driving home and have a very nasty wobble around 80km/h, get home and find all the front wheel nuts loose to varying amounts?????? It just seems strange for this to happen. The wheels were last removed 7000km ago by either the car yard or a tyre shop to put the new tyres on it for when I picked it up. I guess its my responsibility to check these things and will in the future, just I have never had this happen before to any car. Its a 99 GU with nissan steel rims.

Cheers stefan

Looks like it may be as you suspected with the tyre change then. There have been a few posts on here where tyre dealers/service guys either over or under tension wheel nuts. You'll have to get into the habit of checking them regularly.

At the next major service when the hubs are removed, Id get the studs replaced. (if you need to remove the hubs to replace studs).
Studs are cheap, pulling a hub of to replace them is expensive. Best to utilse the time the the hub is off for service.
Running loose like that wil most likely set up cracks the will probably result in broken studs at unconvenient times, thus replace them cheaply at a time convenient to you.

my two bobs.

It was good that it only wobbled, usually they fall off completely.

Stefan,

Join the club! Please go back and read the past posts on this. We're getting about one case every 2-3 weeks on Exploroz alone. Interesting that yours had steel wheels though because my theory was that there is a major problem with the alloys from 2002 on. I agree that it will be worth changing the studs to be sure they aren't the problem. I'd also get a torque wrench and make sure you tighten nuts to the 100ftlb that the manual specifies.

Cheers

Peter

I have tried this trick,Had the brakes serviced all round,at my office years ago, travel 100 yards, rear wheel passed me on the first corner & it went between two park cars. Hell very hairy because in 5min I would of been on Gateway Bridge Brisbane ,travelling @ 70-80 Klm. The service guy did not tighten nuts, did a lot of damage, also to his cheque. It was not my Turn that day.

I was watching 4WD TV yesterday and there on the program was a Nissan proudly throwing its right front wheel up into the air. All six wheel studs snapped. Mind you it was in an off road competition.

I would have to admit that your post sounds like the trick, Too have 12 nuts come loose at the same time???? just doesnt sit right. Thanks to all for your advice. The well documented problem with the wheel coming off involes snapped studs doesn't it?

Cheers Stefan

I've also lost a rear wheel on 2003 Patrol and on Friday as I was driving in to work, there on the side of the road was another older Patrol with the rear passenger wheel missing. From the marks on the road it came off whilst he was moving. There have been lots of theories chucked around about what's causing the problem but I'm convinced it is a Nissan fault, not tyre dealers etc, otherwise there would be cars losing wheels all over the place
