Hi guys - posted a question a while ago about the engine light coming on when touring with the air conditioning and after market (Autron) cruise control is set. I don't believe this is related to fluid build up or other issues as stated in the manual for when the engine light comes on. The result is a total loss of power.

At the Melbourne 4x4 show, the young fella from Autron suggested that this may be an earthing problem which comes to light when too much electronic gear is added to the GU.

Has anyone heard or experienced this problem before and can comment on the diagnosis?

Cheers
Mike

He may well be correct. I added driving lights to my old GU and when you turn them on, the main fuel gauge goes down to the first quarter mark,, and still does. Earthing is a problem. Check the archives, one post shows pics of an earthing strap on the inner guard that can produce a bad contact.. Michael

The earth from the battery goes to the body, but not the chassis !!!!

The only thing earthed to the chassis AND body is the aux fuel tank. Add an extra earth strap to the chassis from the battery and all "should" be fixed.

That's what I'm told anyway.

My theory is that any extra electrical on the car should include an earth wire all the way back to the battery or where the battery earths on the motor.

In the old days manufacturers would earth to the nearest point which was usually the body. Over time the panels would tend to become insulated with rust and the headlamps would dim or the indicators would not work. I had a Torana that did this to me once.

Another problem with loose currents in the body work is premature rust where unlike metals (chromed parts for instance) lived close together. And then there is radio interference to consider as well.

Cant find your original post ! ,

I have had the check engine light on for various reasons , and believe me the ECU is one bad liar when it comes to reading fault codes !

It is normal to feel reduced power with the check engine light on , this is the limp home mode.

I had problems including 'lack of power' 'surging power' and was about to take it for a deisal service , when I tried to book in the guy said to change the fuel filter , this cured all my problems , I now change fuel filters every 10K not 40K as in the manual .

Glenn.
