If you like Bird - feathered kind - there is
Gluepot Bird Sanctuary - nothing too challenging and great if you can get there before sunup for bird watching.

To get there, you need to head towards Taylorville and it's about 70k's from the turnoff.
You used to have to get a key from the shell at waikerie but I think that is changed now.
It is worth the drive out there.

Nice point Dex,
The road out there is a sandy mallee graded track but generally pretty ok when I went out there.
There are a range of tracks out there.
Certainly the key wasn't required when I went out there - there were permanent rangers there.
When I was out there we had a stack of beautiful princess parrots, butcher birds, and a hawk to scare the rest off ;-) as
well as piles of rosellas and galahs.
Cheers
Andrew.

I was out near there yesterday helping member Blaze and his Brother yesterday doing a Mallee Fowl survey. It is very dry out there now and although we found 9 nests yesterday on a 2 square kilometer area, none of them are being worked this year. One of them did see a group of
young Regent Parrots and a few others. Plenty of Babblers and honey eaters around still.

No Key needed for Glue Pot, sure your not thinking of Stockyard Plains Des. This is about 20 k's west of waikerie on Sturt Highway and you do need a key from the servo for this one. Probably a better bet if you want to do some bird watching as it always has
water there for the salt inseption scheme. Better still go down to the
water front at the
lions park, (really nice bird watching there) hehehehe

You may be able to get into the
old quarry, just on the outskirts of town. The State association (SAAFWDC) is trying to get a long term lease on that property for 4wdriving training purposes. I don't think it's currently padlocked or policed etc. There are some quite steep, rocky tracks in there.

Roachie,
The SAAFWDC are conducting a driver advisor course at the quarry this weekend, but given the size of the quarry area, it may not be a problem.

Just got back from a trip down there, inlaws live on the
blanchetown rd (big yellow tyre). My father in law works at brenda
park and gave us a tour of vineyards including old buildings decaying, gravesites, the remains of a couple of steam engines etc. Quite an interesting trip. The boys may take you for a tour if you ask.
If you wanted to go a bit further overland corner is a good spot too,
camping, a couple of tracks and a great little pub with a bit of history.
I'm not sure what the bushes were but they scratch your car up good, my first and last interaction with them.
Speaking of Waikerie I had a lovely day there getting my wisdon tooth ripped out! Ahh relaxing holiday.
