Has anyone ever had recovery points fitted to the front of a Hyundai Terracan and can give me an idea of cost. At first glance, the chassis seams quite high and behind quite a lot of plastic bumper. Also my mechanic has warned me about any recovery triggering the air bag sensors inthe front bumper - and air bags are expensive to re-pack!

G'day Randall, I reckon the best place for advice on the Hyundai Terracan, a very under-rated vehicle is at this site Oz Terracan User Group

I'm sure that you'll find them to be very friendly and without undue sarcasim. Give them a go, you might be surprised.

There are no sensors in the front bumper ( mine has been removed for a bull bar ) and have seen a few Terracans recovered with no ill effects to air bags. If you have a look, there are two plastic covers that unclip if you want to use the two original tow points, and it is recomended to remove them if going 4x4 as they sometimes get dislodged or even lost if going thru mud or water.

The towing eyes are attached to the chassis, same as if you added some aftermarket ones ??

And there is a good tow point at the rear, just in case you need to pull out a _ _ _ _ sometime !!!!

Aaaahhh, so the MIGHTY jerrycan does need tow hooks after all. All that criticism from Patrol/Cruiser drivers when you have blocked the track finally paid off did it?

Mightn't be able to pass you going up a range but when the going gets tough who you gonna call?

Answer options:
1. Ghostbusters
2. A real 4wd

Correct Answer: 2

Ha ha ha, got the one eyed monsters going again eh !!!!

If you haven't needed a tow, you haven't been 4wding then have you ????

Have been out with Patrols and Cruisers and the only ones haven't been able to keep up with have had diff locks !!!

What sort of Patrol have you got ? If its standard, maybe you want to see how it stacks up with a Jerrycan in the rough stuff as well ??? Geez, I'd hate to see you in my rear view mirror again !!!!

Think I'm joking ?? Maybe, but then you might change your mind about them, but I know you wouldn't, the blinkers are stuck on eh ??

Dear Mr Gronk
That was a light hearted reply from me so don't get your tits in a tangle..I have no opinion on your type of vehicle , we buy what we like or can afford...so if you do see me in your mirror, it's because you are stopped for a cupper.wave and i will have one with you. I don't mind mixing with other people, i might even make one for you ,

Not a biggie about who tows who out. I have been known to tow a Patrol out of a ditch on the side of a very greasy road with a Kia Sportage (Taylors Rd, Lyndhurst). I have also been towed out by Suzuki Sierras (Toolangi State Forest and others)....

Sometimes it is more about the tyres and tyre pressures than the vehicle.

Hello Muzbry, I wasn't getting my knickers in a knot as my 1st reply was also tongue in cheek !!!

I was replying to Patrol Ben mainly, cause I think he needs to lighten up a bit and look around and smell the roses, if you know what I mean !!!

If you look at any of my replies I have never bagged any other makes, only tried to point out that there are other 4wds out there apart from Patrols & Cruisers !!!

I think in one reply I said I'd have a Cruiser if I could afford one !!

Thats ok Mr Gronk
When my son and i go out , he wonders why i keep on stopping,,to look at the roses as you say,,,
I do have an old Patrol and my son has an even older Rocky,,we both have a real good time ,looking at trees and creeks ,,we cross some of the creeks two or three times just for the thrill,,its good to stop half way through and spray the ignition to dry it off,, a bit cold on the feet but all has been well so far...we don't drive fast and don't realy care if we are passed by others who cant see the roses...

Enjoy the weekend away..thats as far as it goes

We don't get many weekends off , but we do enjoy them....

Randall

The Terracan comes standard with two recovery points, left hand front and left hand rear-- there are also tie down points which of course should not be used--the recovery points have been assessed by 'experts' (other than us Terracan owners) as being more than adequate in doing what they are designed for and some 4wd specialists do not consider it necessary to replace or supplement the standard points. If fitted with a tow bar you can also use the tow hitch (not the towball) for recovery operations, there are special fittings available for tow hitches if you dont want to risk bending the pin. Anyway Terracans never need recovering, they are mostly used for extracting other vehicles. But check out the Terracan Forum for more info on all Terracan things. Have not heard of any airbags being triggered.

regards

Just a couple of brief general points:

If you have two factory tow points, the safest method is to join the two points with a 3metre equalisation strap (AKA sling, or bridle), and have this go through the loop of a snatch strap. this method halves the load on each point, prevents twisting of the chassis, and is much safer if a recovery point were to break.

I took the vehicle to a local Hyundai dealer and was told by the "expert" that the front left and rear left (passenger side) points are rated for recovery.

Thanks all.

PS I recommend the Terracan forum at forum.australia4wd.com
