MARCH FLY

It will be that this time of the year , Up on the Beach ,camping @ Noosa Freshwater or North or South. March Flies can spoil your Weekend.
I have discovered that by slow Burning of Coconut Husk ,The Smoke Smell through your Camp ,which have a nice smell ,(husk only, not the hole rotten Coconut ) No MORE March Flies. So give it a try next Time it Works

They just Leave. I have found that some Last Year drew Blood .& it was a bad year.

Last November some of my sons contractors spent a week end camped on the beach with me ,They Played Cricket on the Beach they scored 28 Runs in 1/2 Hour, I won with 74 March Flies Dead .

I discovered it by accident,my son & I were been attached big time early morning last January ,Our camp fire was still warm from the night before so I threw some coconut husk on to get the fire going as we where going to cook a cheese, bacon & egg Damper later. As soon as the smoke & smell came the march flies went, other times I have sat by the fire & the little Sh------- s still bite

IT works don't need much smoke just the smell of the coconut husk Smouldering

Don't know about other southern states not many coconuts on the beach, wash up.

Have a Great Day

Gday
We don't get many coconuts floating up on the beach here in Dandenong so we will have to import some husk (mungi mungi ) to our southern land and test out your theory

Thanks for the tip. I have one come visit me every morning lately, little B zooms around until I take a swipe. I was going to grab some spray :)

Does that coconut husk smoke keep any other bities away I wonder ? Sand flies , mozzies etc ?

Just remember that March flies are attracted to the colour blue.
It amazes me that so much camping equipment is blue, we first noticed this using blue buckets to get water from the rivers. We now use green & the problem has all but gone away.

"March Fly" is an interesting name for em. I assume it comes from our early settlers. Do they appear in Europe in March ? Or is there another reason ?
I've heard them described as "horse flies" and "elephant flies" (politely of course :), are there other terms for the little B's ?

It is just a bastardisation of the correct name, which is "marsh fly"

Someone told me one day that the March fly or Horse flies weren't in Australia until after the return of the soldiers from the Boer War.
Did they bring the horses back with them?

I should have added that it was suggested that the flies come back with the horses, but I am not sure if the horses came back.

Take some cotton with you.
Catch some and make little nooses with the cotton.
They make great pets on a lead.
Tie one at each end & watch them fight which way to go.
Or you can poke a blade of grass up their bum & let them go, very amusing watching them flying vertically.
Or rip one wing off, every time they try to take off they flip over.
Might as well make use of them, it keeps the kids amused for ages.
