I have a Kia Sportage and would like to ask about recovery points on the front - I cannot find an aftermarket hook to fit.
Any one got any ideas (KiwiKia?) - thanks

We accompanied a 2002 Sportage across the Simpson this year. I was satisfied that the two tow points would be satisfactory provided an equalisation strap is used between the two points. The tow points and bolts appear to be substantial, given the size of the vehicle. Pulling a light vehicle obviously required less force.

AFAIK the points are meant as recovery points. The vehicle chassis was designed initially as a military chassis (KM 404 Light vehicle, for the South Korean Military, essentially the South Korean Jeep/Landrover) I doubt they would have specified "tie down points only".
Use a 3 1/4 tonne rated shackle, you need to feed the pin up from the bottom (fiddly, but can be done).

Gary, none of the 4wd manufacturers call their points "recovery" points - it leaves them wide open for legal reasons. They usually call them either "tow" points or t\"tie-down" points depending on their intended purpose. The Sportage has two nice "tow" points, but if you intend on doing a "snatch" recovery, then I'd suggest you invest in the equalisation strap. This halves the load on each point and adds a high degree of safety should one
point break.

Hi IanM, Send me an email;
nzrees@paradise.net.nz
I will send you some photos of how my recovery hooks are attached (I have one short and one long Sportage).
I would not use the tie down points because thats exactly what they are.
These vehicles are based on a military vehicle but are adapted to civilian use as the Sportage and differ from the original military design.

Kiwi Kia
Tried to send you an e-mail but it bounced back at me - I am really keen to see you pictures - my e-mail address is
imdraft@optusnet.com.au
Thanks a lot for your help, I will let you know how I get on if you like (always good to talk to another Kia owner, there are not that many of us over here - at least not many that get our cars dirty judging by the lack of accessories available).
