For all those contemplating having a knee replacement Ithought I would give an update on my recovery. As I said in a previous post I had a double replacement (very brave) on 27 July.It has been 13 weeks and so far things are going fine. Here is a quick rundown.Hospital stay was 10 days and Ileft on crutches.Iwas driving after 4 weeks and gave the crutches away at 12 weeks.Walking now long distances with no pain.Have 120 degree bend in both knees which should improve over time.Last week I went goat shooting which was a 9 hour drive each way and it was no problem. The downside is that there is to be no jogging or running and kneeling is difficult but Ican live with that.Istill get some pain at night and take a pain killer for that but am told that will soon stop.So to all those with bad knees that neede replacement joints Iwould do it as soon as and having a double was not nice but a lot easier than I expected.Imust say that my surgeon said my recovery was better than average but everyone is different. My advice is get fit before the op. and go for it.---Cheers.

Well done Rambler I totally agree about not waiting too long. Not only do you miss out but the muscle wastage degrades the post op rehabilitation. If you are an active person and your lifestyle is compromised then go for it.

My wife had one done 3 years ago. She is a bad arthritic and everything went wrong that could, but she eventually came good after about 18 months. At the time it was tough, especially for her (!) but it was definitely the right choice.

We have some friends who have had their wait extended greatly because they don't have private health insurance and the outcome will definitely be worse for it.

cheers
alastair

Hope your recovery goes well and you continue to improve quickly.

On another note, noticed your photo of the walcott track. Did you enjoy the ride there and back? I loved that track. We did it in 2004. How did you go fishing wise?

When we were there the local land managers had just set fire to the grassland and there were millions of flies and very few fish. Over three days we only got one feed of mangrove jack.

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on walcott.

Good on you Rambler. Its all in the mind....LOL

Yep, the pain should go away after about 6 months although I had very little pain post op and got off the painkillers two weeks after the op. It takes about 12 months for a full recovery. It is now 14 months past my second TKR and I am walking OK although I find my balance slighly impaired. I have to concentrate like mad when scrambling up a ladder to do something on the roof etc :-)

I wasn't fit before the ops at all, in fact I was in a wheelchair prior to the first op.

Trouble is the surgeons say that the replacement will only last 10 years...what then????? No doubt I will find out when the time comes.

Now all I need is for my neck and lower back to be replaced..............................

PS One prosthesis is screwed on and the other cemented on

Cheers

After 10 years you have to get it done again like my brother did and he's had the other done once, something to look forward for me also as it runs in the family.

Goodness Sue

That is a very young age for knee replacement. The specialist woudn't do my knees until I turned 60. Luckily I have no trouble with my hips but have osteo arthritis in neck and lower back. There is no cure for that unfortunately. Still life goes on and I keep active and keep my brain working lol

Cheers

Food for thought...
An old bloke I know was told by his doc that he needed 2 new knees or he wouldn't be walking in 6 months. He started taking high doses of Vitamin H (3000mg per day) and 3 years down the track has no problems with his knees and has never had a knee replacement!!!
May not work for everyone of course.

Hi there The Rambler, my pop just had his done 3 weeks ago, has no pain what so ever in the knees but the muscle (dont know what its called) above the knee is very sore as these are the ones he is trying to build back up. He is just on panadol for now and was told will be on them for a while possibly another few months. He has 105 degree at the moment. He had both done as well, his were ratsh@t from his earlier sporting days, he is now back to 1 walking stick but hopes to be off that in the next week or two. He asked about driving the other day and the doctor said he will know when he is ready but did say approx 10 weeks, but left the decision up to him. They told him to sit in car drive up driveway hit the brakes as if some body walked out in front of him and said if that hurts your not ready. He is 79 this year and left it this long as he was freightened of the operation. He had to have heart tests, lung tests before they would operate. He lost 7 kilos while in hospital cause of the pain killers they were giving him were too strong and making him sick changed his meds and he started eating ok. I'm glad to hear you had no problems and on your way to a full recovery, and hope it gives you no further troubles and before long you will be running again. Glad to hear of no infections or the sort they are the main worry I think these days in the hospitals. Take care and look after yourself. Regards Steve M

Rambler, you are a credit to us males....
It annoys me that as we age the various little avenues of lifes pleasure are closed to us... for me it was getting diabetes, then being diagnosed with PTSD, then my prostate packed it it, then sleep aponea hit & now I'm also faced with the prospect of knee joint replacement....
Rambler I'm not as game as you, but your post has been inspirational, truly inspirational...
A mate had his done & he has not done as well as you, still in pain & on crutches after 5 months....

It was interesting to get all the replys and it makes me realise that Iam having a good run.Ialso had all the tests including heart and lung before the op. and also gave 3 units of blood to be used during the op.Ilost 6 kilos which Idon't miss but I suppose the beer will put that back.
Sdrooy, Idid enjoy my trip into WAlcot Inlet and although very dry the flies weren't toobad. The fishing was not as good as Iexpected and we mainly caught one shark after another but ithink if you get there in early June you will get a lot of barra.Care has to be taken on the track especially at the jumpups and a guy we met in there had done a lot of damage to his camper trailer--lucky he had a welder.
Well to the other oldies (Iam nearly 66) just enjoy every day as who knows what's round the corner.
p.s. my doc says my new knees are good for 15-20years so i'll make the most of it.

I can remember my late aunt who was one of the early knee transplants never got off her elbow crutches or a walking frame after her knees were done. That seems such a long while ago too. Could get nothing like the flexibility of her natural knees but the pain had gone and she wa partially mobile.

Had both done at once 9 weeks ago. In hospital for 6 days, crutches gone after 9 days, walking stick for 5 days, driving after 16 days. Is great to be able to walk again long distance. Prior to having knees replaced some days could only walk 50mtrs

Yes PJ we had a good shoot on a station Ivisited for the first time.It was up in the Murchison and we got 4 the first evening and 12 the nexy morning, so decided that was enough as they do muster the goats for sale so we didn't want to spoil our welcome. It will keep me in meat for a while as I prefer goat to lamb.
