G'day All

Over the last few days at idle I have noticed there is a tinny-sounding rattle coming from what seems to be the general area of the air-con compressor. It is only there at idle and disappears when the air-conditioner is turned on, which leads me to suspect that it is the air-con compressor. Anyone had a similar unusual noise coming from this area of their 3.0L Nissan? Any idea what sort of dollars I would be looking at for a new air-con compressor installed and regassed?

Thanks in advance

Snowy

I have 2003 GU 4.2. Had similar sound coming from mine. Traced it to rubber boot where it goes through firewall. The aircon metal pipe sat low in boot and vibrated against firewall. A good upward reef didn't seem to break anything. Still sits low but does not vibrate.

It could be the belt tensioner set-up, which is just near the air con compressor. Pud and Barb's was making a horrible noise at idle a couple of years ago when were camped with 'em on the Murray and he and I ended up jury-rigging a couple of bits 'n' pieces to get him back home to Yass.

From memory it cost around $400- for the new assembly. It's like a little shock absorber set-up with a pulley.......made of alloy. The whole assembly is about as big as your hand and bolts onto the front of the motor. It's a bloody stupid, under-engineered set-up in my opinion.

The best way to check it would be to take the plastic air dam off the bottom of the chassis below the radiator and you should be able to see if it's worn.

Good luck

G'day Snowy

Just had similar prob with rattle noise on my 3.0 Litre. It was the bearings on the belt tensioner assy which had worn sufficiently to allow them to slap around a little when it was cold creating the "rattle" noise.

The noise went away after a short drive and would only be noticable again at idle when cold.

Cost around $300odd supplied and installed at nissan service centre.

Cheers
