Have just purchased our first van and need to get a
TV antenna. What are the do's and don'ts? We do not want a weinguard due to cost.
Also we don't need particualrly good reception as we are only interested in using it in major cities.

Any of the available ones will do the trick. May be an advantage that the one you buy can be used with an amplifier but do ensure that it can be mounted for either vertical or horizontal signal polarity....
The winegard is a good antenna untill you find yourself somewhere that still uses vertical polarity.
As UHF TV signals are now the norm you just have to make sure you are in line of sight of the transmitter to get the best reception, a wet tree or a large building in front of your antenna will play havoc with your reception....Don't be conned into thinking that the most expensive is any better than the cheapest, you should compare specs though these at times can be a tad speculative....
tricky dicks & bunnings had some "Portable ones" last time I looked.
I'm not sure of the performance of the omnidirectional ones but one of the affianados will no doubt reply with results.

Pajeroman,
I use Digimatch Explorer Caravan
TV Antenna from Dick Smiths part number L4024 combined with a Kingray MHW34FS Mast Head amplifier.
So far so good.
But keep an eye on this
Forum as Derek from ABR has got some TV Aerials and Boosters coming from Hong Kong that may be the new must have item for Caravans.
Regards
John

Should add that the Didimatch does both polarities (Virtical & Horizontal)

I have a Happy Wanderer original T-bar aerial which works fine, and better with the booster providing you're on 240v. All up cost around $150. Here's the link

Ahh the bain off my holiday life!!!!
We have just returned from 8 weeks around W.A. We have a yagi antenna from Dick Smiths $70, It can be used both vertical and horizontally. Most
places it was ok with a bit of trial and error. But after talking to people I don't think there is such a thing as the all-rounder.
Currently looking at the pro's and con's of Satellite, but is the expense worth what's on the useless box. (other than the news)

Caravan
forum has plenty information caravan TV aerials and extension poles and stuff. We use a Digmatch Explorer because it is the only aerial that does all channels in Australia in both vertical and horizontal. Bought the Digimatch Explorer from Jaycar

I have just finished my research on TV antennas and have decided upon a Digimatch from DSE at $69 plus a MHW34FS and a PSK12F power supply. I still havent worked out an effective way of placing a mast onto our pop up Goldstream, need something than can be adjusted from ground level and it will have to be mounted on the side of the roof.
