Hi all,
I have an 80series (1995) petrol cruiser. The sub tank seems to be draining into main tank even when I haven't engaged the sub tank control on the dash. Does anyone know what the problem could be, & if so is it easy to fix?
Thanks for any advice. Brett

Not much help to you, But I have a 99 GU which seems to let a little through, mainly in off road situations, doesn't seem to do it on road.

Cheers Stefan

Hi Stefan,

The GU's will transfer fuel from the sub to the main every time you start the car for around 5-10 seconds. Its automatic and is independant of the sub tank switch. Will only stop if the sub tank is empty.

Not on mine - 94 Petrol GXL 80 Series. I can (read: could) run the main bone dry and still have the sub tank full - it only transfers when I press the "Sub" switch on.

But then again maybe mine's the one with the "problem" hehe!

Cheers
Scoey!

It does pump a litre or two I am told when you start the engine. Its to keep the pump and seals lubricated. I have noticed it on mine on trips where you stop/start the engine often the sub tank will go from 1/2 full to 1/4 full over a day. I think it has to drain a fair bit before it will register on the fuel gauge (same as the main tank) so you dont notice it when it is fully topped up.

Hi Brett,

Could it be the air in the tank expanding due to heat and pushing fuel into the main? Do you see it more when the sub tank has less fuel in it than when it is full (more air volume and greater ability to expand)? In this case you may have a blocked breather on the sub tank.

It may also be the same as the GU where the subtank ECU is designed so as to transfer a small amount of fuel each time the car is started (as mentioned above). Don't ask me why but could have something to do with keeping the line primed or pump lubricated.

Regards
David

If the operating system is the same as the diesel there are 2 control solenoids, one in the feed to the engine, the other the return.
From new, my '97 1hz. would empty both tanks when the sub tank ccontrol was activated. It was caused by gritty particles holding the solenoid valves open, took many attempts to overcome but finally ok.
Its a pain to get at these solenoids for removal, and I had to make a set of leads to hold the valve open whilst the muck was blown out with comp. air.
hope of some help. kesh

Hi Brett

It's normal. When you start the engine, the sub-tank pump operates for a short while to keep it lubricated which, over time, will empty your sub-tank.
