Pete,
Am working in China at the moment and flew into HK from Shanghai yesterday. Amongst others I will be talking to a aussie guy today who lives here and is an electronic gizmo tragic. He has owned one of everything at some point. Will ask him but I bet Truckster is right.

Pete,
The answer seems to be that the maps are not readily available but can be got if you have a few days. The price is unlikely to be much cheaper as they would be one off. Buy in Aus so you have a come back & support.
My friend has just bought a new PDA with GPS. No idea why. Hardly need it for Hong Kong and he doesn't drive anywhere.
So Truckster was effectively right.
cheers
