Hi All,

Can someone assist me with the decision of buying a Milton Bottle sterilizer. We have a new born and intend hitting the high country over the christmas period and there is a possibility that the little one may need to be on formula. So I am considering purchasing a Milton bottle sterilizer to sterilize the bottles. Has anyone used these?? I know they work as my mum used one for me but with the changes over the past 30 odd years are they still effective.
The need to be bottle fed, is due to SWMBO has MS and may need to have medication to stem a relapse that is predicted to hit around the 3 month mark. But as stubborn as she is, we are still planning the trip. We are of the opinion that MS will not rule our way of life but just add to the experience.
Thanks
Kev

Hi Kev,

I can't help you with the steriliser, but wanted to say good on you for getting out there, your wife must be a woman of strength and resilience and I take my hat off to you both.
Where will your trip take you? If you end up in the whitsundays your most welcome to call in and say g'day.

Cackles,
It just takes a bit of forthought and the co operation of her GP and Specialist. She was diagonised in 02 and was wheel chair bound for a while until she learnt to walk again. As luck would have it she is her healthyist when pregnate ha ha ha.
Like all normal families we carry on regardless and just have to plan for the inevidable (spelling) of a relapse. Her symptoms range from pins and needles in the arms and legs to a total loss of co ordination of her legs or sometimes loss of sight. We take each day as it comes and fit as much in as possible.

As for travelling to the Whitsundays, I have relies in Cairns and within the next 12 months or so, we are moving back to Gods country and hopefully do the Cape trip.
We will no doubt call in and say hi to a few Ex Oz people during our travels.
Cheers Kev

We used (and still do) Miltons solution. Dont know about any sort of special sterilizer, we just use a locking lid container so the solution doesnt end up all over the car, and after washing the bottles soak them in the solution for the required time (often while we are driving) and when we get to camp, pull out, rinse, dry, hey presto.

Mike,
I don't like the look of the Milton sterilizer contraption so we will probably used a screw top container that would fit into the space available.

Hi Kev,

We travelled with a 6 week old no problems using the steriliser. as the others have said, its easy, just make sure that the lid is secure other wise it gets messy. Interesting that now with a couple of kids, the whole sterilising thing becomes less important after you see them eating food off the floor that they just dropped......

I agree about the lessing of importance of the sterillizing after a couple of kids but at about 3 months of age SWMBO will still be pedantic about what Peta is feeding from. How long can you keep the same solution for?? Can you just keep adding to it for a couple of days or do you need to replace it daily or after each batch is sterilised?

think I've responded in the wrong part....we changed it daily - but we were never too far off the beaten track. I can't recall the instructions (kids now 4 & 6) but believe daily change is part of the process. Obviously water carrying capabilities will aletr depending on your travels. As you said, you can't be too carefull when they are very new.

I don't think water will be a problem, my soon to be delivered trailer has the capacity to hold 12 jerries and for the trip I wont need extra fuel so I'll be able to carry as much water as I perceive to be need plus a bit extra. I suppose I'll just have to get one and follow the distructions for a change.
Thanks

Try clicking on "trips with kids" on this site, it has some useful information about that.

Kev,
We have travelled a fair bit with our kids when still needing to sterilize, after washing bottles normally,we just used the milton solution in a spare washup dish with a plate on top to keep them submerged, this is while stationary. A sealed tupperware dish or similar would be good if travelling. The solution needs to replaced every 24 hours. Don't think you would need another sterilizer, might save you some dollars for some disposable nappies for camping. Hope this helps.

Cheers Andrew

Andrew,
We have the Electric jobbie at home and Peta uses disposable nappies anyway.
In the 24hr period can you add to the contents ie add more bottles?

cheers Kev

Hi Kev

I only ever used Milton solution and the upright sterilizer unit. I used it at home and camping. All kids were OK. So long as you follow the instructions, go for it!There was none of the microwave stuff around then.
If you are truly worried and can do it then boil all bottles, teats etc required for 10 minutes.
Good luck and have a great time!!!

Kev,
Going by the directions on the bottle you only need to soak for 15 min, store items hygienically til needed, and replace solution every 24hrs. We just left our bottles in the solution til they were needed, give them a good shake and fill with formula. It has a good shelf life as well. They make a tablet form as well. Good luck with it all.

Cheers Andrew & Trish
