We hired a traditional "soft top" camper trailer before buying a flip-over hard top style, some years ago. With the hard top style you don't have to worry about what is under the canvas floor when you erect it, mud, stones, snakes, crocodiles, tent pegging, etc., and if it has rained overnight you are not lifting, pushing or folding wet muddy flooring. We bought a Busranger brand (see www.beachsidecaravans.com.au), which we were exremely happy with and which was about 1/2 your budget brand new. There are others such as the Cub which are cheaper than Kimberley, Campomatic etc. Are the more expensive ones that much better? Who knows, depnds on your pespective and budget.

We have just put our old touring tent away and gone to a CT in our old age.
Found that site very useful, besides doing all the shows.

Took us a while to tie down what we wanted, soft top, hard top, size, options, budget (do you ever have enough folding stuff?), what would work for us.

Narrowed it down to a short list of manufacturers (about 4) in the local area (SE Qld) and went from there.

There is a huge range out there, so I don't think it would be helpful to try and steer you in any direction.

Got away for our shake down trip 2 weeks ago.
The storm and heavy rain on the last night didn't even phase us.
Too many years in a tent I suppose.
I think our CT it will work well for us.
Spent $6,000.00 for a 18mth old one, almost new condition, but we do travel basic.

Have a search for Teardrop campers. There is one of the manufacturers in Brisbane who also posts on this forum sometimes. They are small and light enough to tow comfortably behind a Golf while still having options like annexes and such like. I think a full blown camper could very quickly get too heavy for you otherwise.

Another alternative would be to search for campers based on an alloy body which would reduce the weight a lot.

Trek c/trailers do 1 of the best "on road " in your weight range ,,price starts at 13 or so . Quality is way way up there ,, as per usual no interest in company ect ect , , just thoughts on your request ,,, swmbo,s 2nd cousin twice removed has one of the on road "trek" trailers , has been to places many so called off road trailers cant hack ,towed behind a scubedoo.
