Im leaving SYD sat morn at 3AM to go to vitoria to pick up my new Van that has been built for us and I would just like to clear up a little debate I had with a mate last night , can I legally tow my van at what ever the speed limit on roads say I.E, 110KMH on freeways or do I have to stay below 90KMH and no I dont normally speed I am a very safe driver ( IMO) but I dont want to cause an accident by going too slow even though I will drve under if I think its a bit hairy anyway just thought Id ask .

Hi there JB, just rang RTA to check and you can do what ever the stated speed limit is. They have lifted the speed restrictions that they use to have in place. So if it says 110kph then you can do it. This is for NSW only not sure on the other states. Regards Steve M

I do not believe that you will cause an accident by travelling at 90kmh....it is usually the impatient idiots that think that everybody should be going at the fastest speed possible that causes accidents , take your time , drive sensibly and safely and to hell with with those that think you should not....cheers

J.B. a new van. Gee I would be very reluctant to travel at such speeds not knowing the characteristics of the new van, how balanced it might be, how secure everything is attached etc. Why not use the return trip as a 'shakedown', take your time, check relevant nuts and bolts and arrive home safetly with your new van still in one piece.

Thanx guys that's the kind of feedback I was hoping for and yes I agree that motorist can just lump it as I'm not about to risk the lives of my family just to get somewhere 15 min faster, I used to drive trucks and was always given the finger a couple of times a week so I will just get used to it all again ....I'm a bit nervous as
well as excited about our new toy I don't think I will be sleeping much tonight !!!!

Johnny--enjoy the van but note that your car's handbook may have a maximum speed when towing mentioned in it. In a lot of states this is the legal maximum you can do when towing.

Hi Jonny Boy,
People seem to forget that the signs posted are a LIMIT not a compulsory speed rate.
I must admit i was one of them until i got a non-turbo diesel LOL
now i plod along at 90-100 k's once i get up there that is. Its amazing how much time and fuel you DON'T save by doing at 110k's or trying with your foot flat to the boards.
