Hi There

Can anyone please tell me if you pull into a town and obtain casual employment for a couple of weeks, do you have to advise the caravan park that you will be working for a short term?

Hi Bumpkins, I don't see why you need to if you don't want to.
Actually, I would tell them that is what you intend to do, just so they can put you somewhere that will not be on a spot that may be reserved for someone coming in to the park in a week or so. Also, you can get a spot that is down the back a bit where it doesn't disturb people when you go early for work. Park owners don't mind if you are working, plenty of people are doing the same thing at c/parks. Good luck, and happy trails.

Looking at it from another angle, if you need to find the work after you get there letting the CP people know they might know where work is going.

Just my thoughts

Thanks for your replys. We have been told that we are not welcome to stay at our current caravan park because my husband has started a casual job for a couple of weeks. I was told that the park was only for TOURISTS. That is what we are. We are travelling around Australia and have been for 3mths so far and have never had this response from a caravan park.
Thanks again

Your kidding !!!!!
How bluddy rude !!!!

Could you do me a favour and mention where this park is so I can be sure to NEVER stay there in my future travels.
Might be worth mentioning this in Caravaners forum , might get a few interesting responses.
I don't know whether I would move out with a parting gesture of "stuff you !" or stay there just to spite them.

It is common in some towns that there is a caravan park set aside for workers. I dont know if this is deliberate through council zonings or just happens because of cheaper rates.

Still i would have thought if you pay the rate why would it matter.

No! What you do or not do for a living is not their business, you don't have to tell them anything.

If they give you any grief about not being a "tourist" for goodness sake start talking about seeking clarification from the anti discrimination board and of course, as previously mentioned name the joint on this forum so that those of us that wish can bombard them with emails and generate as much negative publicity as we can.

On second thoughts why not name them now? Then all those who wish my email polite enquiries along the line of "My company is sending me to your town for one week to carry out some local work. I intend to take my wife along for the trip. Will you please confirm the rumour that asserts that because I am not a bona fide tourist I am not welcome in your park."

Might make them think again. Then we send of some emails to the local Chamber Of Commerce and perhaps the Council explaining why we will not be spending our dollars in their town.

Shame the bastards in their own town.

Thanks for your comments. I would love to drop the name of the caravan park but I do not want this to come back and bite me. We are in Karratha and we are staying in a large Australian chain of parks and not the cheapest either. They have over 150 sites. The park is about half empty. It is not peak season here. I have sent a formal complaint to the head office of the chain of parks who have advised will follow up. I wont hold my breath for a resolution as we have to be gone by 10am tomorrow. All we want to do is cash up and continue on our trip. I cant see how this has anything to do with the park as we keep our site clean and we dont disturb anyone. I cant believe a caravan park would refuse business in there low tourist season.
Thanks again

Hey Bumkins,

Good luck with your trip. Maybe when you get away from this place you might like to then let us have their name.

Please give an update on the results you get back from the head office so that when we have to decide between which park to stay at we can take your results into account.

I used to be in & out of Karratha a lot when I was in the Oil & Gas game. It was almost a second home. Either the Karratha International or a helicopter!!!

You need to be careful when talking about Karratha. It's the "boom town" of Australia right now and has been for a few years due to oil & gas and mining booms. House prices are astronomical, vacant accomodation of any description is almost non-existent. Rents are around $700.00 a week for a pretty ordinary small house. There's big dollars to be had in Karratha.

However, I find the park's attitude a bit puzzling. Except to say that SOME of the workforce around Karratha are transient contractors on big money. They work hard, drink hard and party hard, sometimes all night.

Perhaps the park, after some unpleasant experiences, have decided on a blanket ban on all workers and have decided to get thier profits from increasing number of tourist that are hitting The Pilbara.

It's shame really, 'cos the other van park at the Karratha Industrial Estate is 99% workers and it's a hell hole.

Have you tried Dampier? Much nicer but a bit further out of KTA. Or how about bush camping at Cleaverville? It's about 15 minutes up the road from KTA. Beach camping for 5 dollars a night. Might need a genny and an air con though. Getting a bit hot up there right now.

Good luck,

Bilbo

Hi Bumpkins.
Hubby and I (32 yrs) and our two kids are looking at travelling round Auz doing the same thing - work a bit - travel a bit. Have you found if difficult to find work. What types of things have you been able to get? What qualifications have you got and is it worth it?
Thanks a heap.

Hi Nenie

There is plenty of work around depending on what you want to do. We are int the same situation with 2 children. My hubby is a tradesman so if you have a trade you will have no trouble getting work. If you get a HR licence you will be laughing. Plenty of trck driver jobs. Best work to get is at a caravan park. We have travelled 3 months without having to work. This is our first stop. You will have a ball and so will your kids. Good Luck.

Yes - hubby has a trade - he is a panel beater, he has his tow truck license, his fork lift license and I am sure it is a MR license. We also both want to get our motor bike license before we go.

And me - hard to say what I am - A mother most importantly, but I have been doing family day care for 2 years so am able to look after children. Thinking that maybe I need a certificate to go with that though.

But, we are both willing to do anything that we can get to get a pay packet. Still in the process of saving though. Did you leave with much money behind you. We are looking at renting out our house as well. Do you have children, and what are you doing with them regarding schooling?
