Check at the council office. We found that to be the most up to date info.

G'day Rob P,
Regular contributor on this subject (Bros) may respond to you when he reads this post. But in the meantime consider contacting
Cooktown ranger (Gary Lyons - he may not be there according to his latest writing in a fishing mag) but he is a regular up that way. As of September the best track was the coastal track and there were still a lot of difficulties with
creek crossing due to the late wet last season. BUT conditions change and it may be OK now. Just remember to allow plenty of fuel for the journey.
Kind regards

Rob P,
As Beatit said, the coast road from
cooktown was the best route going up in early August to
Bathurst Bay.
The alternate route through Lakefield and
Kalpowar was ok coming back if you studied the best track through the
water. (i didn't and nearly drowned the Tojo twice). Never had to winch or snatch anyone.
If you are going to
Bathurst Head solely, then the best and shortest way would be through Lakefield.
Can be very hot up there this time of year and you never know when it is going to rain, but it should be alright for a while yet.
Let us know how you go bloke.
Cheers, Bros.

Hi Rob
Was there late August via Kalpower/Lakefield - It had only just dried out then.
Watch the weather, people have been getting stuck after moderate rain even over the last 2 months. (Its been a bit wetter this year)
There is a long stretch of very lowlying country as you get out towards
Bathurst Heads - gets sticky and takes a while to get through when wet.
Keep an eye on our Road conditions report for that area. www.exploroz.com/Roads/QLD.asp
(We welcome any live feedback after you return - you can enter feedback live into the road conditions reports)
cheers
